Tata Sons Reappoints N. Chandrasekaran for Another Five-Year Term

Mumbai, Sept 2026 : Tata Sons on Thursday announced that N. Chandrasekaran will continue as its Executive Chairman for another five-year term, reversing his earlier decision not to seek an extension of his tenure.

Chandrasekaran’s current term is scheduled to end in February. The latest development comes amid reported differences within the Tata Group’s leadership over the continuation of his tenure, with Tata Trusts holding a majority stake in Tata Sons.

Chandrasekaran had indicated last month that he would not seek reappointment after the Tata Sons board was unable to reach a resolution on extending his term. However, according to a statement issued by Tata Sons on Thursday, he subsequently agreed to reconsider his decision following a request from the board.

The board then passed a resolution by majority vote to reappoint Chandrasekaran as Executive Chairman for a further five-year period after the completion of his current tenure.

“The Board received from Tata Trusts their unanimous resolution dated July 28, 2025 expressing their appreciation of the Chairman of Tata Sons, N. Chandrasekaran (Chandra), for his stewardship of the Group from 2017 onwards,” Tata Sons said in its statement.

The company said Tata Trusts had, in recognition of his leadership, resolved that Chandrasekaran be reappointed as Executive Chairman for another five years following the expiry of his existing term.

“At the meeting of the Board on September 17, 2026, Chandra acceded to the Board’s request to re-consider his decision. The Board thereafter resolved by a majority vote to re-appoint him as Executive Chairman for a further term of five years upon the expiry of his current tenure,” the statement added.

The announcement has added to uncertainty surrounding the leadership structure of the Tata Group. Earlier on Thursday, Noel Tata, Chairman of Tata Trusts, which holds a 66 per cent stake in Tata Sons, reportedly described Chandrasekaran’s reappointment as “illegal”.

The development has also attracted significant attention from investors. Shares of several listed Tata Group companies witnessed strong buying interest during Thursday’s trading session following the announcement.

Tata Group stocks rallied by as much as 14 per cent in afternoon trade amid the news of Chandrasekaran’s fresh five-year term and developments related to the proposed initial public offering (IPO) of Tata Sons.

Chandrasekaran has served as Chairman of Tata Sons since 2017, overseeing the group’s diverse businesses across sectors including automobiles, information technology, steel, consumer products and aviation.

His continuation would provide leadership continuity at the group as Tata Sons works through major strategic initiatives, including the proposed IPO and other business expansion plans.

The immediate focus is expected to remain on the governance and shareholder issues surrounding the reappointment, as well as the implications for the future leadership structure of the Tata Group.
