Major expansion in opportunities for the state’s youth to become doctors

Lucknow, September 2026 : For Uttar Pradesh youth aspiring to become doctors, the Yogi Government has opened up a wealth of opportunities in medical education. The second round of NEET UG-2026 counseling in the state is set to begin on September 14. Meanwhile, figures on the expansion of medical education show that under the leadership of CM Yogi Adityanath, Uttar Pradesh has taken a major leap toward preparing a new generation of doctors.

In 2017, the state had 36 medical colleges and 4,690 MBBS seats. As of August 20, 2026, the number of medical colleges has increased to 85 and MBBS seats have reached 13,600. This means that over eight years, 49 new medical colleges have been added and 8,910 additional MBBS seats have been created. This change is not merely a statistic reflecting the growing number of medical colleges; it also tells the story of a major expansion in the opportunities available every year to pursue medical education in the state. While Uttar Pradesh had a total of 2,740 MBBS seats in 2012, the number has now reached 13,600. This nearly fivefold increase in seat capacity is laying the foundation for preparing a new generation of doctors in the coming years.

The government sector has played the most significant role in expanding medical education. In 2017, 15 government medical colleges were operational in the state. As of August 20, 2026, their number has increased to 45. The number of MBBS seats in government medical colleges has also increased from 1,990 in 2017 to 5,350. This means that 3,360 seats have been added in the government sector during these years. As a result, opportunities for youth in government medical education have expanded significantly compared with the past. This expansion has strengthened the foundation for making medical education opportunities available across different regions of the state.

The private sector has also contributed to the expansion of medical education. In 2017, the state had 21 private medical colleges, which increased to 40 as of August 20, 2026. The number of MBBS seats in the private sector has also increased from 2,700 to 8,250. Thus, compared with 2017, the private sector has added 5,550 MBBS seats. The growing capacity of both the government and private sectors has broadened the overall scope of opportunities for medical education in the state.

DG Medical Education Neha Sharma stated, “Under the leadership of CM Yogi Adityanath, along with increasing the number of medical colleges, emphasis is also being placed on strengthening the infrastructure for medical education. Projects such as medical colleges, hospitals, nursing colleges, and hostels are increasing the state’s capacity to prepare trained human resources for healthcare services. Expanding government medical colleges is an important step toward increasing access to medical education across different regions of the state. In the coming years, doctors trained at these institutions will contribute to healthcare services in the state and the country.”

The expansion of medical colleges and MBBS seats in Uttar Pradesh underlines the priority being accorded to medical education under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Compared with 2017, the number of medical colleges has increased by 49 and MBBS seats by 8,910. The growing capacity of medical education has expanded opportunities for the state's youth aspiring to become doctors. In the coming years, this increased capacity will provide the foundation for Uttar Pradesh to further strengthen its role among the leading states preparing a new generation of doctors.
