From Fisherman’s Son to MLA: A.D. Thomas Scripts Remarkable Victory in Alappuzha
Alappuzha, May 2026 : Not long ago, A. D. Thomas was seen as a bloodied face on the streets of Kerala during the Nava Kerala Yatra led by Pinarayi Vijayan, an image that stirred public outrage. On Monday, the 30-year-old Congress leader entered the Assembly as the newly elected MLA from Alappuzha, marking a journey defined by resilience, struggle and a sense of vindication.
Thomas secured a decisive victory over sitting MLA P. P. Chitharanjan by a margin of 21,015 votes, breaching what was long considered a Left stronghold. His win is being viewed not just as a political shift but as a deeply personal triumph that resonates strongly with the people of the coastal constituency.
Born in Mararikulam North to Dominic Jackson and Akkamma, Thomas grew up in modest circumstances. His family lived in a small house with a tiled and asbestos roof, often battling financial challenges. His father earned a livelihood by selling fish, striving to provide education for his children. As a young boy, Thomas frequently accompanied him to sea in a small country boat, experiences that exposed him early to hardship and uncertainty.
Those formative years shaped his outlook and determination. His father, reflecting on his son’s journey, expressed pride at how Thomas had overcome adversity to emerge as a leader. From the sea to the political stage, his rise has been both unlikely and inspiring.
Thomas’s political journey began in student activism, where he became known for his involvement in protests on issues such as exam paper leaks and shortages of Plus One seats. His activism, however, came with consequences, including 18 cases filed against him, all linked to protest activities. Despite this, he remained steadfast in his engagement with public issues.
A turning point came during the Nava Kerala Yatra, when Thomas was assaulted while showing a black flag in protest. The incident drew widespread attention and sympathy, cementing his image as a determined and fearless activist. When the Congress party fielded him as a candidate, it was widely seen as recognition of his perseverance.
The electorate responded emphatically. Thomas secured 81,065 votes, a mandate that many interpret as both an endorsement of his leadership and a rejection of the status quo. His victory symbolizes a broader aspiration for change among voters.
As Thomas steps into the Assembly, his journey from a fisherman’s son navigating rough seas to a legislator representing his people stands out as a powerful narrative. For the coastal communities of Alappuzha, his success represents more than political change — it is the rise of one of their own, carrying their voices into the corridors of power.
