India Women Rally from Two Goals Down to Beat USA 3-2 in Nations Cup Opener

Auckland, June 2026 : The Indian women’s hockey team produced a spirited comeback to defeat the United States 3-2 in their opening Pool A match of the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup at the North Harbour National Hockey Centre on Sunday.

After falling two goals behind in the opening minutes, India fought back brilliantly through a brace from Deepika and a decisive strike by Navneet Kaur to begin their campaign on a winning note.

Returning to the national side in style, Deepika was the standout performer of the match and was deservedly named the Player of the Match for her two crucial goals.

The USA made an explosive start and stunned India with an early breakthrough. Ashley Sessa opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a field goal, giving the Americans a dream start.

India’s troubles deepened just three minutes later when Madeleine Zimmer converted a penalty corner in the seventh minute to double the USA’s advantage and put the Indian defence under pressure.

Trailing 0-2, India gradually found their rhythm and began to dominate possession. Their efforts were rewarded in the second quarter when drag-flick specialist Deepika pulled one back in the 17th minute, converting a penalty corner with precision.

The goal shifted momentum in India’s favour, and the team continued to press forward in search of an equaliser.

Deepika struck again in the 24th minute, successfully converting another penalty corner to level the scores at 2-2 and complete India’s comeback from a difficult start.

With confidence growing, India maintained relentless pressure on the American defence. Just four minutes later, Navneet Kaur completed the turnaround by converting a penalty corner in the 28th minute, giving India a 3-2 lead before halftime.

The second half witnessed an intense battle as both teams searched for goals. India and the USA earned six penalty corners each over the course of the match, but both defensive units stood firm in the final two quarters.

India showed composure and discipline in the closing stages to protect their slender lead and secure all three points.

The victory placed India second in Pool A with three points, level with Japan, who top the standings on goal difference.

The win also highlighted India’s resilience and ability to respond under pressure—qualities that could prove vital as the tournament progresses.

India will next face Japan in their second Pool A encounter on June 16 at 6:30 a.m. IST, in what promises to be a crucial match in the race for a place in the knockout stages.

Score: India 3 (Deepika 17′, 24′; Navneet Kaur 28′) beat USA 2 (Ashley Sessa 4′, Madeleine Zimmer 7′).
