Himanta Biswa Sarma Predicts More Congress Exits After Bhupen Borah Resignation

Guwahati, Feb 2026 : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday claimed that the Congress party in the state is heading for further erosion, asserting that several senior leaders are likely to quit following the resignation of veteran leader Bhupen Borah. Addressing reporters in Guwahati, Sarma said the developments clearly indicate a deepening crisis within the Congress and its declining relevance among the people of Assam.

According to the Chief Minister, senior Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi is also expected to leave the party ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. “Pradyut Bordoloi will quit the Congress before the Lok Sabha polls,” Sarma claimed, adding that the resignation of Borah has triggered uncertainty and dissatisfaction within the party’s senior ranks.

The Assam CM went on to make another bold political prediction, stating that senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia would eventually join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. “After the 2026 elections, Debabrata Saikia will come to the BJP. I will personally speak to his mother and bring him to the BJP,” Sarma said, underscoring his confidence about future political realignments in the state.

Referring to Bhupen Borah’s resignation earlier in the day, the Chief Minister said the move reflected the Congress party’s internal turmoil and leadership vacuum. Borah, who has spent more than three decades in the Congress, stepped down citing issues related to self-respect and organisational failures. His resignation has sparked intense political debate and speculation across Assam.

Sarma also revealed that he plans to meet Borah soon, though he did not elaborate on the agenda of the proposed meeting. “I will meet Bhupen Borah tomorrow,” he said, leaving room for political conjecture about possible future developments.

Launching a sharp attack on the Congress, the Chief Minister alleged that the party no longer represents the aspirations of Assam’s people. “A Hindu and a common Assamese person cannot stay in the Congress party anymore,” Sarma remarked, accusing the party of alienating its traditional support base through its policies and leadership style.

He further claimed that the Congress leadership is disconnected from grassroots workers and lacks the capacity to take firm organisational decisions. According to Sarma, this disconnect has led to growing frustration not only among senior leaders but also among party workers at the ground level.

Highlighting the BJP’s growing influence in Assam, Sarma said leaders and workers from opposition parties are increasingly realising that development, stability, and effective governance are possible only under BJP-led governments at both the Centre and the state.

Political observers believe the Chief Minister’s remarks are strategically timed to put additional pressure on the Congress, which is already grappling with internal challenges ahead of the crucial Assembly elections, potentially reshaping Assam’s political landscape in the months to come.
