India is the World’s Fastest-Growing Economy: Finland President Alexander Stubb
Mumbai, March 2026 : President of Finland Alexander Stubb said that India is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world and emphasized that Finland needs India’s cooperation to achieve sustainable development. He noted that the bilateral relations between India and Finland are strong and that his visit would further strengthen these ties.
President Alexander Stubb is currently on a visit to India. An interaction programme with representatives of various companies from India and Finland was organized at Hotel Taj Palace. The event was attended by Finland’s Minister of Employment Matias Marttinen, National Stock Exchange Chief Executive Officer Ashish Chauhan, Chief Investment Officer of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority Dr. Shankar Deshpande, State Secretary of Finland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Jukka Salovaara, Finland’s Consul General in Mumbai Erik af Hällström, Assistant Saju Nair, and others.
President Alexander Stubb said that during his visit to New Delhi he held discussions with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. He noted that over the past few years India has witnessed remarkable development and has made impressive progress across various sectors. Finland is ready to work with India in multiple areas, he said, adding that improvements in infrastructure are clear evidence of this progress.
He further said that Finland’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is smaller than the budget of the state, but efforts are being made to increase it with the support of the private sector.
President Stubb emphasized that both countries must work together to achieve sustainable development while protecting the environment. For progress, transformation is needed in areas such as quantum computing, supercomputing, research, innovation, renewable energy, and green energy.
He also noted that Europe is engaging in free trade with India, which reflects India’s growing importance on the global stage.
On the occasion, President Stubb also extended his best wishes to the Indian cricket team for the final match of the International T20 Cricket World Cup.
The programme was moderated by Finland’s Consul General in Mumbai, Erik af Hällström. National Stock Exchange CEO Ashish Chauhan, Chief Investment Officer of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority Dr. Shankar Deshpande, and representatives of several Finnish companies also shared their views during the event.
