Trump Signals Possible Iran Deal, Says Talks Could Stabilise Middle East
Washington, March 2026 : US President Donald Trump on Monday said ongoing negotiations with Iran could pave the way for long-term stability in the Middle East, a region crucial to global energy supplies and home to millions of expatriates.
Speaking to reporters during a tarmac interaction in Miami, Florida, Trump revealed that the United States and Iran have held “very, very strong talks” and are nearing a potential agreement. He indicated that discussions have covered “almost all points of agreement,” raising hopes of a breakthrough in the coming days.
“They want very much to make a deal. We’d like to make you a deal, too,” Trump said, adding that both sides are working within a five-day window to assess progress and determine the next steps.
However, he cautioned that failure to reach an agreement could result in continued military action. “If it goes well, we’re going to end up settling this. Otherwise, we’ll just keep bombing,” he remarked, underlining the high stakes involved in the negotiations.
Trump reiterated that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons remains a central objective of US policy. He emphasised a strict “no enrichment” stance and highlighted broader goals of ensuring regional peace. According to him, a successful deal would not only stabilise the region but also benefit key US allies such as Israel, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain.
He also claimed that Iran had initiated the latest round of engagement, suggesting that Tehran was keen to avoid further escalation. Referring to a planned strike that was not carried out, Trump said, “They called. I didn’t call. They want to make a deal.”
In a notable assertion, Trump said the United States could take control of Iran’s enriched uranium as part of any agreement, indicating a stringent framework under consideration.
Describing the internal situation in Iran, Trump claimed that multiple leadership groups had been eliminated during earlier phases of the conflict, adding that the remaining leadership was now more representative of the country.
Despite the optimism, he acknowledged uncertainty over the outcome. “I’m guaranteeing nothing. All I’m saying is we are in the throes of a real possibility of making the deal,” he said.
Trump also pointed to the potential economic impact of a deal, particularly on global oil markets. He suggested that oil prices could fall sharply if an agreement is reached, reflecting reduced geopolitical risk.
On domestic issues, Trump addressed the deployment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at US airports, stating that he had advised against the use of masks in such settings, while defending the agency’s broader role.
He also criticised Democrats over the ongoing federal shutdown and immigration policies, while defending earlier US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, claiming they had significantly delayed Iran’s nuclear programme.
The outcome of these talks is being closely watched globally, especially by countries dependent on Middle Eastern energy supplies and regional stability.
