US Warns Iran Against ‘Illegal’ Toll Plan in Strait of Hormuz
Washington, March 2026 : The United States has raised serious concerns over reports that Iran could introduce a toll system in the Strait of Hormuz, calling any such move “illegal” and potentially dangerous for global trade and security.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that one of the immediate challenges following the current phase of tensions could be an attempt by Iran to control access to the vital shipping route. He warned that imposing tolls on vessels passing through the strait would be unacceptable under international norms.
Rubio emphasised that such a move would not only violate international law but also threaten global stability. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors, through which a significant portion of global oil and trade flows. Any disruption or restriction could have far-reaching economic consequences for countries across the globe.
He stressed the need for a coordinated international response to counter any attempt to impose unilateral control over the waterway. According to Rubio, the United States has already begun discussions with its allies and partners to prepare a collective strategy to address the situation if it arises.
“The world must be ready with a plan,” Rubio said, adding that the United States is prepared to play an active role in any joint effort. However, he made it clear that Washington does not intend to act alone and expects other nations to share responsibility in ensuring the free flow of maritime trade.
Highlighting the global importance of the Strait, Rubio noted that many countries, including those in Asia and beyond, rely heavily on the route for energy supplies and trade. He said the issue goes beyond Western economies and requires broader international participation.
Rubio also cautioned against allowing any country to exert unilateral control over international waterways. He argued that critical global routes like the Strait of Hormuz must remain open and free from restrictions imposed by individual states.
The Secretary further stated that there appears to be growing consensus among partner nations on the need to address the issue collectively. He indicated that several countries recognise the risks involved and are willing to contribute to a joint response.
The warning comes amid rising geopolitical tensions in the region, with concerns that any escalation could disrupt key shipping lanes. The United States has reiterated its commitment to maintaining stability and ensuring that international trade routes remain secure and accessible to all nations.
