Samrat Choudhary Elected BJP Legislature Leader, Set to Become Bihar Chief Minister
Patna, April 2026 : In a significant political development, Samrat Choudhary has been elected as the leader of the BJP legislative party, clearing the path for him to assume office as the next Chief Minister of Bihar.
The decision was taken during a crucial meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislative party held at the party’s state headquarters on Veer Chand Patel Path in Patna on Tuesday. The meeting was overseen by Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who attended as the central observer appointed by the party leadership.
Several senior leaders were present at the meeting, including BJP National President Nitin Nabin, party general secretary B. L. Santosh, and senior leader Bhikhu Bhai Dalsaniya. The atmosphere reflected unity within the party as it moved towards a leadership transition.
The proposal to appoint Samrat Choudhary as the legislative party leader was put forward by Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha and was seconded by former Deputy Chief Minister Renu Devi. The proposal received unanimous support, underscoring consensus within the party ranks.
With this decision, Choudhary is set to lead both the BJP and the new government in Bihar, marking a major shift in the state’s political leadership. The development signals the beginning of a new chapter, as Bihar transitions from the long-standing leadership of Nitish Kumar to a new administration under BJP leadership.
Earlier in the day, Nitish Kumar formally stepped down as Chief Minister after chairing his final cabinet meeting. He subsequently visited the Raj Bhavan and submitted his resignation to Governor Syed Ata Hasnain, recommending the dissolution of his council of ministers.
Nitish Kumar’s resignation comes shortly after he took oath as a Rajya Sabha member, effectively bringing an end to his extended tenure in Bihar’s state politics. His exit has paved the way for the formation of a new government under BJP leadership.
Following the election of Samrat Choudhary as legislative party leader, preparations for the swearing-in ceremony have begun. An official announcement regarding the formation of the new government is expected soon, after which Choudhary will formally take charge as Chief Minister.
The political landscape in Bihar is now witnessing a decisive transition, closing one era and ushering in a new phase of governance under fresh leadership.
