Sanjay Verma Appointed New DGP of Maharashtra, Replacing Rashmi Shukla
Mumbai: Sanjay Kumar Verma, a 1990-batch IPS officer, was appointed as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Maharashtra on Tuesday, November 5. Verma, currently serving as Director General of Legal and Technical, will succeed Rashmi Shukla. His appointment follows Shukla’s removal, which came after complaints from opposition parties. Verma is expected to hold the position until his scheduled retirement in April 2028.
Rashmi Shukla’s removal from the top police post occurred just two weeks before the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections. In a significant decision, the Election Commission of India (ECI) ordered Shukla’s immediate transfer after receiving complaints from the Congress and other political parties.
Following Shukla’s transfer on Monday, Vivek Phansalkar was assigned additional responsibilities. The ECI also directed the Maharashtra Chief Secretary to temporarily assign Shukla’s duties to the next senior IPS officer. Sources indicate that the Chief Secretary was instructed to submit a panel of three IPS officers for the DGP position by Tuesday afternoon.
