10 Dead, Several Injured in Stampede at Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj

Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh: A tragic stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj on Wednesday left at least 10 people dead and several others injured. The incident occurred during the second Shahi Snan on Mauni Amavasya, when thousands of devotees gathered at the Triveni Sangam for the sacred bath. Around 2 am, as the crowd surged towards the 12-km-long ghats, barricades were broken, triggering chaos and a deadly stampede. Many devotees sustained injuries, and several families were separated in the commotion.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath confirmed the stampede, attributing it to devotees jumping over barricades. He assured that the situation was under control and urged people not to spread misinformation. He highlighted the challenges of managing an event of such magnitude, with nearly eight to ten crore devotees attending. He also noted that six crore pilgrims had already taken a dip in the Sangam the previous day.

Following the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi contacted Adityanath multiple times to assess the situation. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Health Minister JP Nadda also extended their support, assuring all necessary assistance from the central government. Officials are working to restore order and prevent further incidents.

Authorities have intensified crowd control measures as the event continues. Once the situation stabilizes, the saints are expected to proceed with the amrit snan (holy bath). In the meantime, officials are ensuring that safety protocols are strictly followed to prevent further mishaps.
