Tamil Nadu Urban Housing Development Board Allocates 712 Residential Units
Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru M.K. Stalin, distributed allocation orders for 712 residential units under the Tamil Nadu Urban Housing Development Board. These units are located in Chandrayogi Samoothi, Ratho Krishnapuram, and Sathi Voni Muthunagar project areas.
The event took place today (19.02.2025) at Don Bosco School in Santhome, Chennai, where the Hon’ble Chief Minister handed over the allotment orders to the beneficiaries.
The Tamil Nadu Housing Board was initially established in 1970 by former Chief Minister Kalaignar to provide affordable housing to urban poor families. However, beyond housing, the state government is committed to improving the living standards of urban poor communities by ensuring access to clean water, sanitation, electricity, roads, education, healthcare, waste management, and public spaces. Recognizing this, the Hon’ble Chief Minister renamed the Tamil Nadu Housing Board as the Tamil Nadu Urban Housing Development Board. The rebranding reflects a broader vision beyond just constructing houses—it aims to uplift the socio-economic conditions of the urban poor.
Under the leadership of the Hon’ble Chief Minister, a total of 44,609 apartment units have been constructed across 131 locations in 23 projects, at an estimated cost of ₹5059.28 crore. So far, 55,898 beneficiaries have been allotted houses. Additionally, for families temporarily displaced due to housing projects, the government increased the temporary rental assistance from ₹8,000 to ₹24,000 per family. A total of ₹23.96 crore has been disbursed to 10,081 families under this initiative.
The Chief Minister also introduced a new scheme, “Our Residence, Our Responsibility,” encouraging resident welfare associations to take responsibility for the maintenance and upkeep of apartment buildings. The Tamil Nadu government has allocated funds to assist in minor repairs and maintenance, and ₹6.30 crore has already been disbursed to 694 resident welfare associations.
Recently, on 29.10.2024, the Hon’ble Chief Minister inaugurated additional housing units:
- 240 flats in Thiru.Vi.Ka Nagar project area under Indira Gandhi Colony
- 438 flats in Sathi Voni Muthunagar project area
- 168 flats in Ratho Krishnapuram project area
In total, 712 flats were allocated to eligible beneficiaries today.
To ensure affordability, the government set a subsidized contribution rate of ₹83,000 per unit for beneficiaries in Indira Gandhi Colony and ₹1.5 lakh per unit for beneficiaries in Ratho Krishnapuram and Sathi Voni Muthunagar. The amount can be paid over a 20-year period in easy installments of ₹500 and ₹625 per month, respectively.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Minister for MSMEs Thiru T.M. Anbarasan, Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Thiru P.K. Sekar Babu, Chennai Mayor Thirumathi R. Priya, Members of Parliament, MLAs, senior government officials, and representatives from various organizations.
