No Cracks or Potholes on Dharamveer Swarajrakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Mumbai Coastal Road

Preventive Measures: Additional Mastic Layer Applied

Mumbai Coastal Road Project is Completely Safe

Mumbai – The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has clarified that the Dharamveer Swarajrakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Mumbai Coastal Road (South) Project is completely safe and free of cracks or potholes.

Recently, images and videos of mastic layer work on the Haji Ali bridge section of the coastal road have surfaced in the media, leading to allegations of construction defects. However, BMC has firmly refuted these claims, stating that the visible patches on the road are part of a preventive measure to protect the asphalt layer from potential damage during the monsoon. The civic body has assured that the road’s original appearance will be restored within 15 to 20 days.

To prevent misunderstandings, BMC has provided the following clarification:

  • The northbound section of the Mumbai Coastal Road (Chowpatty to Worli) was opened for traffic in July 2024 after asphalt work was completed. However, some joints had widened, prompting the application of an additional mastic layer to prevent further expansion and reinforce the asphalt before the monsoon season.
  • The purpose of the mastic layer is to prevent potholes and road damage due to heavy rains.
  • A new asphalt layer will be applied following standard guidelines, restoring the road to its original condition within 15 to 20 days.
  • The southbound section (Worli to Chowpatty) did not require mastic layering, as it was opened in March 2024, allowing sufficient time for the asphalt to settle before the monsoon.

BMC urges citizens and media not to believe in rumors or incomplete information. The Mumbai Coastal Road Project is a landmark infrastructure development that sets new standards in engineering, construction quality, and safety for Mumbai, Maharashtra, and the country. The public is requested to have confidence in the project and avoid unnecessary doubts.
