RMC Alipore issued Special Bulletin – 3

Thunderstorm activity over the districts of West Bengal during 11^th. to 15^th. April 2025.

A trough runs from northeast Madhya Pradesh to Bangladesh across Jharkhand and extends upto 1.5 kilometres above mean sea level. The upper air cyclonic circulation over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim & neighbourhood at 3.1 kilometres above mean sea level persists.  A trough runs from above cyclonic circulation over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim & neighbourhood to West-Central Bay of Bengal at 3.1 kilometres above mean sea level. Due to favourable wind pattern and strong moisture incursion from Bay of Bengal, thunderstorm with lightning and strong gusty surface wind very likely to occur in some districts of West Bengal during 11-15^th. April 2025.

Past 24 hours observed significant weather:

A Squall passed over Alipore (Kolkata) at 2208 hours IST of 10.04.2025 from North West direction with maximum wind speed of 53 Kmph. Heavy rainfall (102.4mm) occurred at Alipurduar of Sub Himalayan West Bengal. Very Light to moderate rainfall occurred at most places over West Bengal.

Gusty surface wind speed recorded at Purulia, Asansol, Raidighi, Berhampore, Kharagpur, Bolpur, Canning, Dum Dum, Diamond Harbour, Digha with maximum wind speed of 63, 57, 50,50, 48,48, 46, 42, 40, and 45 Kilometres per hour respectively.

11-04-2025: Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed: 40-50 kmph), lightning and heavy rainfall (07-11 cm) very likely to occur at one or two places over Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and North Dinajpur districts. Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed: 30-40 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over the rest of the districts.

12-04-2025: Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed: 50-60 kmph), lightning and heavy rainfall (07-11 cm) very likely to occur at one or two places over Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and North Dinajpur districts. Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed: 30-40 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over the rest of the districts.

12-04-2025: Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed: 40-50 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places over Purulia, Bankura, West Burdwan and Birbhum districts. Thunderstorm with lightning and light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over the rest of the districts.

13-04-2025: Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed: 50-60 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places over East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Birbhum, Purulia, Bankura, Hooghly, Murshidabad, Nadia and North 24 Parganas districts. Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed: 40-50 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over the rest of the districts.

14-04-2025: Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed: 40-50 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Birbhum, Purulia, Bankura, Murshidabad, Jhargram and West Midnapore districts. 15-04-2025: Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed: 30-40 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Birbhum, Purulia, Bankura, Murshidabad, Jhargram and West Midnapore districts. Thunderstorm with lightning and light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over the rest of the districts.

Possible Impact:  

• Some damages of standing crops, vegetables and horticulture.
• Possibility of lightning strike especially in open field.  
• Damage to loose / unsecured structure.
• Traffic disruption in urban areas.

Actions suggested:  

• Take shelter in safe place during thunderstorm activity.  
• Children should be refrained from going outside their house.
• Avoid taking shelter under tree / electric pole and avoid contact with water bodies.
• Movement of traffic may be regulated judiciously during thunderstorm activity.
• Local civic bodies should declog drains & water outlets to eliminate water accumulations.
