Uttar Pradesh: Safest state in the country in terms of lightning-related deaths
Lucknow : Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the safest state in India regarding lightning-related fatalities. The state records a death rate of just 0.14 per lakh population, significantly lower than Karnataka (0.15), Bihar (0.31), Madhya Pradesh (0.31), Odisha (0.35), and Jharkhand (1.01). These numbers reflect the effectiveness of the Yogi Adityanath government’s proactive disaster management policies and wide-reaching public awareness campaigns.
A comparative analysis highlights Uttar Pradesh’s remarkable performance. For instance, while Jharkhand reports a mortality rate of 1.01 per lakh population, Uttar Pradesh’s rate is nearly seven times lower. Similarly, UP fares far better than states like Bihar, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh in terms of lightning safety. Experts attribute this success to the state’s robust weather forecasting system and rapid alert mechanisms, particularly in rural areas.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state government implemented a comprehensive strategy to tackle lightning-related hazards.
Key initiatives included real-time weather alerts to every village, construction of shelter homes, and intensive awareness drives on lightning safety.
The Disaster Management Department also trained villagers on preventive measures, such as avoiding shelter under trees during storms and seeking safe cover, which has had a visible impact.
Experts believe that Uttar Pradesh’s innovative use of technology in disaster management has laid the foundation for a model that other states can emulate.
