ICAR-CIFRI empowers SC/ST fishers of Sundarbans through training and input distribution
Aug 2025 : ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, successfully organised a two-day Training and Mass Awareness Cum Input Distribution Program at Joygopalpur, Sundarbans, under the Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan (SCSP) and Scheduled Tribe Component (STC). The initiative aimed at uplifting SC and ST fishers of the ecologically fragile Sundarbans region by promoting scientific aquaculture practices and strengthening their livelihood base.

The program was inaugurated in the presence of Mr. Mithun Biswas, IAS, Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), Canning; Professor Dr. Dipak Ranjan Mandal, Former Vice-Chancellor, Sidho Kanho Birsha University, Purulia; Mr. Biswajit Mahakur, Secretary, Joygopalpur Gramme Vikash Kendra; and Dr. Basanta Kumar Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, who encouraged the fishers to adopt modern technologies for sustainable fisheries and better income generation.
During the program, scientists from ICAR-CIFRI delivered practical sessions on pond management, fish species selection, fish health care, efficient feeding practices, water quality maintenance, and the conservation of indigenous fish. The emphasis was laid on the need for diversification, sustainability, and adaptation to climate challenges for improved production and nutritional security.
As a part of the support initiative, more than 300 SC/ST fishers received essential fishery inputs, including quality carp fingerlings and fish feed, to implement the scientific practices. Additionally, 50 aquariums were distributed to nearby schools to promote ornamental fish culture awareness among rural youths.
The participatory training allowed fishers to share their challenges and learn solutions tailored to their local conditions. Experts highlighted how sustainable aquaculture can serve as a reliable livelihood alternative in the climate-sensitive Sundarbans.
This program was conceived and led by Dr. B. K. Das, Director of the institute. Scientific guidance formed a key pillar of the event. ICAR-CIFRI Scientists, Dr. P. K. Parida, Dr. D. Bhakta, Dr. Lianthuamluaia, and Dr. S. Kumari, educated villagers on modern fish farming techniques. Sessions on pond management, feed optimisation, and fish health bridged the gap between traditional practices and scientific knowledge. These interactions addressed practical challenges, building confidence among first-time fish farmers and motivating them toward sustained engagement.
ICAR-CIFRI reaffirmed its commitment to empower the vulnerable SC/ST communities of the Sundarbans with continuous technical support, thereby ensuring improved livelihoods, nutritional security, and a sustainable future for the fishing population.
