Diwali Listed in UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage – Indian Culture to Shine Globally, Says Minister Ashish Shelar
Nagpur, Dec 2025: The inclusion of Diwali in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list will help Indian culture gain global recognition, said Cultural Affairs Minister Adv. Ashish Shelar in statements presented to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and Council.
Earlier this year, under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Maharashtra’s cultural achievements were highlighted by UNESCO’s recognition of the Maratha Military Bhurachana, which is a tangible heritage, explained Minister Shelar.
Now, with Diwali being added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, it is a matter of immense pride. The nomination for 2025–26 was made by the Union Ministry of Culture. Diwali, symbolizing the journey from darkness to light, hope, and success through struggle, reflects positivity.
Diwali has a deep-rooted connection with Maharashtra’s agricultural culture and Marathi traditions, and its history is ancient. Festivals celebrated in harmony with nature underline the uniqueness of Indian culture and highlight its global value. Through such festivals and traditions, Indian culture will spread further across the world.
Minister Shelar acknowledged that this historic honor was made possible due to the consistent efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister of Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. On behalf of the Assembly, he expressed gratitude to both leaders for their support in promoting India’s rich cultural heritage.
