Delhi to Host Authentic Marathi ‘Hurda Party’ and Makar Sankranti Festival
New Delhi, Jan 2026 : To give Delhi residents a taste of Maharashtra’s rural culture, a ‘Hurda Party’ along with the ‘Makar Sankranti Festival’ will be organized at the New Maharashtra Sadan on Kasturba Gandhi Marg from January 9 to 11, between 12 PM and 9:30 PM, according to Resident Commissioner and Secretary R. Vimala.
Following the enthusiastic response from Delhi residents to the ‘Maharashtra Food Festival’ held at Maharashtra Sadan in December, the Hurda Party has been planned as a winter-season culinary celebration.
The Sweetness of Sankranti and the Flavor of Hurda
The festival, held against the backdrop of Makar Sankranti, will showcase traditional culture along with the iconic ‘tilgul’ (sesame-jaggery sweets). Just as farmers in Solapur, Pune, Nashik, and Marathwada celebrate by roasting hurda (green sorghum) on open fires (aakdi), Delhi residents will get the same experience.
Along with hurda, there will be flavorful accompaniments such as garlic chutney, crushed peanuts, yellow jaggery, ghee, buttermilk, steamed pithla-bhakri (gram flour curry with flatbread) on stove, bhakri with fillings, batata vada, bhaji, and traditional rural produce like sugarcane, ber (jujube), and fresh chickpeas. The combination of cold weather, the warmth of open fires, music, and the taste of hurda will create a perfect festive experience.
Additionally, handcrafted items made by women for Sankranti will be available for sale.
This festival aims to serve as an emotional bridge connecting urban and rural life, bringing Delhi residents closer to Maharashtra’s rich culture. Resident Commissioner R. Vimala and Investment Resident Commissioner Sushil Gaikwad have invited everyone to participate in large numbers and enjoy Maharashtra’s hospitality and authentic flavors.
