Restoration Of Freedom Fighter Rashbehari Ghosh’s Ancestral House Taken Up For Restoration.

Barddhaman; January 2026: Lying in ruins for decades, the ancestral house of freedom fighter and Two Time President of the Indian National Congress (INC) Rashbehari Ghosh in West Bengal’s East Burdwan district has been taken up for restoration by the state government, officials said.

Earlier on 15th January, 2026 Officials of the state Public Works Department (PWD) have visited and inspected the ancestral home of Sir Rashbehari Ghosh at Ukhrid in East Burdwan district to carry out a survey for the restoration of the heritage structure. His birthplace and ancestral home have long been facing neglect and decay, prompting local residents to demand that the property be declared a heritage site.

Following sustained efforts by the district administration and with the cooperation of the Sir Rashbehari Ghosh Memorial Protection Committee, the land on which the freedom fighter’s ancestral home stands has been successfully transferred for restoration and conservation. The district administration has entrusted the PWD, Burdwan Division, with the preparation of a detailed project report (DPR). As per official instructions, the initial survey was conducted a few days ago and work on the DPR has commenced. Local residents have welcomed the initiative.

The heritage building was previously constructed using traditional lime mortar and brick techniques, including Chun-Surki and Kadi-Barga. The two-storey structure features various arched doors and windows, while the roof edge is adorned with terracotta pot-style designs.

Rashbehari Ghosh, a prominent figure of India’s nationalist movement, was born in this house in 1845. He was not only a distinguished politician, but was also known as a lawyer and social worker. Rising from a remote rural background, Ghosh was elected INC president in the historic 1907

Surat Session, succeeding Dadabhai Naoroji, after which Congress split into the Moderates and the Extremists. Ghosh was re-elected to the post in the Madras session of the Grand Old Party in 1908. He was knighted in 1915.

Known for his philanthropy, Rashbehari Ghosh had handed over to Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy about 33% of the funds for setting up the Bengal Chemicals and Pharmaceutical Works. He also donated Rs. 13 lakhs to set up the National Council of Education, which developed into Jadavpur University in 1955, almost thirty-four years after his demise.

“It is a matter of great pride that the state government has come up to restore the ancestral house of Sir Rashbehari Ghosh. We all hope that it will further boost tourism in the village”, said Swapan Debnath, Minister of Animal Resources Development.
