Breaking Protocol, PM Modi’s Warm Gesture Towards Children Steals the Show at Red Fort

New Delhi, Aug 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s interaction with schoolchildren and young volunteers after his Independence Day address at the historic Red Fort emerged as one of the most memorable moments of the 80th Independence Day celebrations on Saturday.

Soon after concluding his address from the ramparts of the Red Fort, Modi moved towards groups of schoolchildren, NCC cadets and ‘My Bharat’ volunteers gathered at the venue. As the formal ceremony came to an end with the rendition of ‘Vande Mataram’ and the National Anthem, the Prime Minister chose to personally meet the youngsters, creating an atmosphere of excitement and joy among them.

In a particularly warm moment, a young girl approached Modi and bent down to touch his feet as a mark of respect. Her cap slipped from her head and fell to the ground. Without hesitation, the Prime Minister bent down, picked up the cap and gently placed it back on her head.

The gesture drew smiles and applause from the children and people around them. What could have been a brief ceremonial interaction turned into a spontaneous display of warmth and affection that left the young participants visibly delighted.

Breaking protocol, as he has done on several occasions in previous years, Modi directed his motorcade to stop and walked towards the enclosures where the youngsters were seated. He shook hands with them, exchanged a few words and extended greetings, giving many of the children an opportunity to interact with the Prime Minister from close range.

The young participants had also added a colourful visual element to the celebrations. Students dressed in vibrant yellow and dark blue were arranged in a formation representing the number “70”, symbolising the decades of India’s journey as an independent nation.

The children’s enthusiasm remained high throughout the interaction. Several students later spoke about the experience, describing their meeting with the Prime Minister as exciting, special and unforgettable.

The interaction also complemented the youth-centric themes outlined by Modi during his Independence Day address. The Prime Minister announced several initiatives aimed at expanding opportunities for young Indians, including free online coaching for competitive examinations, a nationwide sports talent identification programme and an ambitious plan to train one crore members of Gen Z in emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence and semiconductor technologies.

By stepping away from the formal proceedings and spending time with the next generation, Modi transformed a highly ceremonial occasion into a personal and engaging moment. His interaction with the children not only generated excitement at the Red Fort but also underscored the central role of youth in India’s aspirations for the future.
