Bengaluru, Sep 2026 : Karnataka Police are set to take former JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna into custody for questioning in connection with the alleged possession and use of a mobile phone inside Bengaluru Central Prison, where he is serving a life sentence following his conviction in a rape case.
Revanna, the grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, is the son of JD(S) MLA H.D. Revanna and nephew of Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy.
The police on Tuesday produced Revanna and another inmate, identified as Pratap, before the Special Court for MPs and MLAs in Bengaluru. The investigators have sought custody of the two accused through a body warrant to question them about the alleged recovery and use of a mobile phone inside the prison.
The case was registered at Parappana Agrahara police station following the reported recovery of an Android mobile phone, a pen drive and a charger from Revanna’s cell at Bengaluru Central Prison.
The matter came to light after a purported video surfaced showing Revanna speaking on a mobile phone from his VIP cell. The footage also allegedly showed him accessing various facilities inside the prison. Following the emergence of the video, police registered an FIR and began investigating the alleged breach of prison security and rules.
According to the police, Pratap has been named accused number one in the case, while Revanna has been listed as accused number two. Both were brought before the court as investigators sought permission to question them regarding the circumstances surrounding the mobile phone’s presence inside the prison.
Police are expected to take Revanna into custody after securing the necessary court approval. Pratap is also being questioned as part of the investigation into the alleged prison security violation.
Preliminary findings have reportedly indicated that an Andhra Pradesh-registered SIM card was inserted into the mobile phone recovered from the cell. Investigators are now attempting to determine how the SIM card was obtained and who facilitated its use inside the prison.
During questioning, Revanna has reportedly told investigators that the mobile phone belonged to Pratap, who was sharing the cell with him. Police are examining this claim as part of their effort to establish ownership and trace the circumstances under which the device entered the prison.
Investigators have also recovered a diary from the cell and are examining its contents. The diary reportedly contained contact numbers belonging to Revanna’s family members and relatives. Preliminary investigation has further indicated that calls were made to some of these relatives using the seized mobile phone.
The police are expected to question both Revanna and Pratap on several aspects of the case, including how the Andhra Pradesh SIM card was procured, who brought the mobile phone into the prison and how the device, charger and other materials reached their cell.
Investigators are also examining whether prison personnel or individuals outside the facility assisted in providing the phone or SIM card. The probe will seek to determine whether established prison security protocols were deliberately bypassed and whether others were involved in facilitating the alleged use of the device.
The alleged mobile phone incident has added another layer to the legal and administrative issues surrounding Revanna, who is currently serving a life sentence following his conviction in a rape case. The police investigation is focused specifically on the alleged possession and use of prohibited electronic equipment inside the prison and any possible involvement of other individuals.
