State-Level Workshop On Modern Sugarcane Production Technologies For Higher Productivity

Bhubaneswar Sep 2026 — The Department of Agriculture & Farmer’s Empowerment, Government of Odisha, inaugurated a two-day State-Level Workshop titled “Modern Sugarcane Production Technologies for Higher Productivity” today at the Krushi Bhawan, Auditorium, Bhubaneswar. Held under the State Sector Scheme “Technology Mission on Sugarcane Development (TMSD),” the workshop aimed to accelerate technology dissemination, strengthen FPO-based market linkages, and boost farm productivity across major sugarcane-growing districts such as Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Ganjam, Jajpur, and Kalahandi.

The inaugural session was graced by the Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister, Minister of Agriculture & Farmers' Empowerment, Energy Shri Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and the Hon’ble Cooperation Minister Shri Pradeep Bal Samant, who highlighted government initiatives focused on reducing cultivation costs and improving sugarcane pricing structures. Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Agriculture Shri Sachin Ramchandra Jadhav, VC, OUAT, Dr Pravat Kumar Roul, Director, Agriculture, Shri Subham Saxena, Director Soil Conservation Shri Subrat Kumar Panda and senior officers.

Addressing the farmers Hon'ble Dy Chief Minister Shri Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo said that, sugarcane holds vast potential to transform rural livelihoods in Odisha. By leveraging modern agronomic practices, precision irrigation, and high-yielding varietal adoption, our target is to significantly raise the average productivity. Through the Technology Mission on Sugarcane Development, we are bringing research straight from laboratories to our fields to ensure our farmers grow more with lower input costs.

Hon'ble Cooperation Minister Shri Pradeep Bal Samanta said that, connecting sugarcane farmers with cooperative models and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) is critical to building direct market linkages and maximizing profit margins. Strengthening the coordination between sugar mills, research institutions, and FPOs will ensure timely procurement, better sugar recovery, and transparent pricing for our cultivators.

This two-day workshop featured technical sessions led by prominent scientists from national research institutes such as ICAR-IISR, ICAR-SBI, ICAR-IIWM, OUAT, and ICAR-CRRI. Discussions covered high-yielding crop varieties, soil health, integrated nutrient and pest management, precision irrigation, and agricultural mechanization. The workshop provided a platform for direct interaction between farmers and scientists. On this occasion, five progressive farmers were honored and rewarded for their contributions to sugarcane production.
