Chennai, September 2026 : The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly is expected to witness sharp exchanges on Monday as Chief Minister Joseph Vijay prepares to respond to Opposition allegations over the law-and-order situation in the state.
The House will resume proceedings at 9.30 am following a three-day break on September 4, 5 and 6. Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar has announced that there will be no Question Hour on Monday. The government is, however, scheduled to introduce an amendment Bill before the Assembly takes up other listed business.
The sitting assumes significance following an intense debate earlier in the session over the demands for grants for the Police and Fire and Rescue Services departments, both of which are under the Chief Minister’s charge.
Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin and AIADMK legislature party leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami had launched strong attacks on the government over its handling of law and order. Stalin alleged that Tamil Nadu had gone into “reverse gear” during the first 116 days of the new administration.
He claimed that nearly 550 criminal incidents had been reported during this period, including around 200 murders, more than 300 cases of sexual assault, eight police-related deaths and 10 suspected honour killings. Stalin used the figures to question the government’s ability to ensure public safety and maintain effective policing across the state.
Palaniswami also accused the administration of failing to prevent murders and robberies. He further alleged that crimes against women and children had increased since the new government assumed office.
Responding to the Opposition’s criticism during the earlier debate, Chief Minister Vijay said he would provide a detailed response to every issue and question raised by the Opposition. He also challenged DMK legislators to remain in the Assembly and listen to his reply rather than staging a walkout.
With the Chief Minister now set to address the allegations, Monday’s proceedings are likely to see intense political exchanges between the treasury and Opposition benches. Vijay is also expected to outline additional measures concerning policing, public safety, and fire and rescue services.
Following the Chief Minister’s response, the Assembly will consider demands for grants related to the Forest, Commercial Taxes, Stamps and Registration, Environment and Climate Change departments. Ministers handling these portfolios are expected to reply to the debates and announce new initiatives.
The ongoing Assembly session has completed 18 days, with discussions on government expenditure, departmental functioning and policy measures forming the core of proceedings.
Monday’s sitting is being closely watched as the Chief Minister’s response could shape the political discourse during the concluding phase of the session and provide the government an opportunity to present its position on the Opposition’s law-and-order allegations.
