Assam Poll Debacle: Jitendra Singh Alwar Resigns, Takes Responsibility for Congress Loss
Guwahati, May 2026 : In the wake of a crushing electoral defeat in the Assam Assembly elections, senior Congress leader Jitendra Singh Alwar on Monday stepped down as the party’s General Secretary in-charge of Assam, taking full responsibility for the disappointing performance.

In his resignation letter addressed to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Singh said he was relinquishing the role with immediate effect, acknowledging that the results fell far short of expectations. Describing the outcome as “deeply disappointing,” he said the party had been unable to connect effectively with the electorate despite sustained efforts during the campaign.
“I write to tender my resignation as General Secretary in-charge of Assam with immediate effect. The recent election results have been deeply disappointing, and I take full responsibility for my role in the outcome,” Singh stated, underlining his accountability for the setback.
He expressed gratitude to the party leadership for entrusting him with the responsibility and thanked the people of Assam, along with party workers and leaders, for their support during his tenure. Singh noted that while the Congress had worked hard to present its agenda, it ultimately failed to meet the aspirations of voters across the state.
“Despite our best efforts, we were unable to meet the expectations of the people of Assam whom we sought to serve. I am grateful for the opportunity to have served and for the trust placed in me,” he said.
Reaffirming his commitment to the Congress party, Singh added that he would continue to contribute to the organisation in whatever capacity required, signalling his intent to remain actively involved in its future political and organisational initiatives.
The resignation comes after the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a sweeping victory in the Assam Assembly elections, winning 82 out of 126 seats, according to results announced by the Election Commission of India. The emphatic mandate paves the way for the BJP to form the government in the state for a third consecutive term, further consolidating its position in the Northeast.
In contrast, the Indian National Congress managed to secure just 19 seats, reflecting a significant gap between the two major parties in what turned out to be a largely one-sided contest.
Among other political players, the Bodoland People’s Front and the Asom Gana Parishad retained their regional influence by winning 10 seats each. The All India United Democratic Front and Raijor Dal secured two seats apiece, while the All India Trinamool Congress opened its account with one seat.
The outcome marks a significant political moment in Assam, reinforcing the BJP’s growing dominance while prompting introspection within the Congress ranks over its electoral strategy and grassroots connect in the state.
