Historic Upset: M. K. Stalin Loses Kolathur, Joins Rare List of Sitting CMs Defeated
Chennai, May 2026 : In a dramatic political development, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M. K. Stalin has become only the second sitting Chief Minister in the state’s history to lose an Assembly election. He was defeated in the Kolathur constituency by V. S. Babu of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), marking a significant turning point in the state’s political landscape.
Babu, a former DMK functionary who switched allegiance to the TVK, capitalised on shifting voter sentiment to secure a notable victory. The result is widely seen as one of the most consequential outcomes of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, underlining the rapid rise of the TVK as a formidable political force.
The only previous instance of a sitting Chief Minister losing an Assembly election in Tamil Nadu dates back to 1996, when J. Jayalalithaa was defeated in the Bargur constituency. Stalin’s loss thus breaks a long-standing pattern in the state, where incumbent Chief Ministers have traditionally retained their seats.
Stalin’s political journey spans more than four decades and has been marked by resilience and steady growth. He made his electoral debut in 1984 from the Thousand Lights constituency but faced defeat in his first contest. He secured his first victory in 1989, only to lose again in 1991. However, he went on to establish a strong foothold by winning three consecutive elections from Thousand Lights between 1996 and 2006.
Following constituency delimitation, Stalin shifted to Kolathur in 2011 and maintained a consistent winning streak, securing victories in 2011, 2016, and 2021. His defeat in 2026, despite this track record, signals a significant shift in voter preferences and political dynamics in Tamil Nadu.
Beyond electoral politics, Stalin has held several key administrative roles. He served as Chennai’s first directly elected Mayor in 1996 and spearheaded the ‘Singara Chennai’ initiative, aimed at modernising the city’s infrastructure. He later held important ministerial portfolios, including Rural Development and Local Administration, strengthening his governance credentials.
After the passing of his father, M. Karunanidhi, in 2018, Stalin assumed leadership of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and led the party back to power in 2021, becoming Chief Minister.
Karunanidhi, notably, had an extraordinary electoral record, winning every election he contested. Against that backdrop, Stalin’s defeat marks a rare and symbolic moment in the DMK’s history, reflecting both a changing political mood and the emergence of new forces reshaping Tamil Nadu’s electoral landscape.
