Ishan Kishan’s 70 Powers SRH into IPL 2026 Playoffs with Five-Wicket Win Over CSK
Chennai, May 2026 : Sunrisers Hyderabad stormed into the playoffs of the Indian Premier League 2026 season after defeating Chennai Super Kings by five wickets in a crucial Match 63 clash at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Monday. A composed and match-winning knock from Ishan Kishan and an aggressive innings from Heinrich Klaasen guided SRH to victory as they successfully chased down a target of 181 in 19 overs.

With the win, Sunrisers Hyderabad secured their place in the IPL 2026 playoffs alongside Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. SRH now have 16 points from 13 matches and significantly boosted their momentum heading into the knockout stage.
Chasing 181, SRH began positively despite losing an early wicket. Abhishek Sharma looked aggressive from the start and attacked Mukesh Choudhary in the opening overs. However, Chennai Super Kings struck back in the third over when Mukesh removed Travis Head with a slower delivery. Head could manage only six runs from six balls before departing.
Following the early wicket, CSK tightened the scoring rate through disciplined bowling. Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan focused on rebuilding the innings while ensuring the required rate remained under control. SRH reached 45/1 at the end of the Power-play with both batters finding timely boundaries.
CSK eventually got the breakthrough in the eighth over when Akeal Hosein dismissed Abhishek Sharma for 26 off 21 balls. The left-hander struck three boundaries and a six during his stay before holing out.
After Abhishek’s dismissal, Ishan Kishan took responsibility for anchoring the chase and found an ideal partner in Heinrich Klaasen, who immediately shifted the pressure back onto the bowlers. Klaasen played with typical aggression, taking on both Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmad with powerful strokeplay.
The South African batter dominated the middle overs, smashing boundaries and sixes regularly as SRH crossed 75/2 after 10 overs. Klaasen also survived a dropped catch, which proved costly for CSK. He made full use of the reprieve and continued to attack the spinners and pacers alike.

Meanwhile, Kishan played the perfect supporting role initially before accelerating steadily. He brought up his half-century in 37 balls with a composed approach that balanced aggression and strike rotation.
The partnership between Kishan and Klaasen turned the game firmly in SRH’s favour. Klaasen eventually fell in the 15th over after scoring a brilliant 47 off just 28 balls. His innings featured six fours and two sixes and provided the momentum SRH needed during the chase.
Even after Klaasen’s dismissal, SRH remained in complete control as Kishan continued to guide the innings intelligently. Nitish Kumar Reddy supported him with calm batting while ensuring there were no further collapses.
Mukesh Choudhary dismissed Nitish Kumar Reddy in the 18th over, briefly raising CSK’s hopes, but Kishan remained composed under pressure. The left-hander finished with a superb 70 off 47 deliveries, including four boundaries and three sixes, in one of his most important innings of the season.
Smaran Ravichandran sealed the victory in style with a boundary as SRH reached 181/5 in 19 overs, completing the chase with six balls remaining and sparking celebrations in the Hyderabad camp.
Earlier in the evening, Chennai Super Kings had posted a competitive total of 180/7 after being asked to bat first.
CSK made a blistering start with Sanju Samson attacking from the opening ball of the innings. He smashed Nitish Kumar Reddy for a six and added two boundaries in the first over before continuing the assault against Praful Hinge with three consecutive fours in the next over.
However, SRH captain Pat Cummins provided the first breakthrough by dismissing Samson for a rapid 27 off 13 balls. Young batter Urvil Patel added momentum with two sixes against Cummins before Sakib Husain bowled him for 13.
Ruturaj Gaikwad and Kartik Sharma then steadied the innings, with Kartik impressing through a quick 32 off 19 balls that included two fours and two sixes. Cummins once again struck at a crucial stage, removing Kartik in the 10th over.
Gaikwad struggled to accelerate and managed only 15 runs before becoming Cummins’ third victim. The Australian pacer also achieved the milestone of 200 wickets in T20 cricket during the match.
The innings was revived by Dewald Brevis and Shivam Dube through a valuable partnership. Brevis looked particularly dangerous, smashing four sixes and two boundaries in his 44 off 27 balls before Eshan Malinga dismissed him in the 18th over. Dube contributed 26, while Prashant Veer added late runs to help CSK finish at 180/7.
For SRH, Cummins was the standout bowler with figures of 3/28, while Sakib Husain picked up two wickets. Praful Hinge and Eshan Malinga claimed one wicket each.
Brief scores: Chennai Super Kings 180/7 in 20 overs (Dewald Brevis 44, Sanju Samson 27, Shivam Dube 26; Pat Cummins 3/28, Sakib Husain 2/34) lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad 181/5 in 19 overs (Ishan Kishan 70, Heinrich Klaasen 47; Mukesh Choudhary 2/36, Akeal Hosein 1/21) by five wickets.
