Late Lower-Order Surge Lifts Lucknow Super Giants to 164/8 Against Gujarat Titans

Lucknow, April 2026 : A spirited late flourish from the lower order helped Lucknow Super Giants recover from a mid-innings slump and post a competitive 164/8 against Gujarat Titans in Match 19 of the Indian Premier League 2026 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

Asked to bat first, Lucknow began on a brisk note despite early setbacks. Mitchell Marsh set the tone with an explosive cameo, smashing 11 runs off just four deliveries, but his stay was cut short by Kagiso Rabada. Captain Rishabh Pant then injected momentum into the innings with a lively 18 off 11 balls, including a six and two boundaries, before falling to Mohammed Siraj.

Despite losing wickets, Lucknow raced to 60/2 by the end of the powerplay, setting a solid platform. Aiden Markram played a crucial role in stabilising the innings during the middle overs. The South African batter scored a fluent 30 off 21 balls, finding the gaps with ease and keeping the scoreboard ticking. However, just as he looked set for a bigger contribution, he fell to a well-executed short ball from Prasidh Krishna, which halted Lucknow’s progress.

The middle phase proved challenging for the hosts, as wickets fell in quick succession and the run rate dipped. Ayush Badoni struggled to make an impact, scoring just 9, while Nicholas Pooran endured a scratchy knock of 19 off 21 balls, managing only two sixes before being dismissed. Abdul Samad also failed to accelerate, scoring 18 off 22 deliveries as Gujarat’s bowlers tightened their grip with disciplined lines and clever variations.

At 120/6 in the 17th over, Lucknow appeared headed for a below-par total. However, the lower order staged a timely recovery. Mukul Choudhary contributed a handy 18 off 14 balls, including a six, while George Linde added a quickfire 16 off 10 deliveries, striking three boundaries to inject much-needed momentum in the death overs.

The final over turned out to be particularly productive, yielding 18 runs. Mohammed Shami provided the finishing touches with a six and a boundary, while Avesh Khan chipped in with a four, helping Lucknow cross the 160-run mark and give their bowlers something to defend.

For Gujarat, Prasidh Krishna was the standout performer, finishing with impressive figures of 4/28. His clever use of pace variations and short-pitched deliveries troubled the batters throughout. Rabada, although expensive with 54 runs conceded in his four overs, managed to pick up a wicket, while Siraj (1/19) maintained control with his disciplined spell. Ashok Sharma also made valuable contributions with 2/32, striking at key moments.

While Lucknow’s innings was marked by an inability to build substantial partnerships in the middle overs, their late surge ensured they reached a fighting total. The momentum gained in the final overs could prove crucial as they look to defend 164 in what promises to be an intriguing chase.

Brief Scores: Lucknow Super Giants 164/8 in 20 overs (Aiden Markram 30, Nicholas Pooran 19; Prasidh Krishna 4/28, Ashok Sharma 2/32) vs Gujarat Titans.
