UN Urges Continued US-Iran Talks, Warns of Global Impact of Strait Disruptions

United Nations, April 2026 : United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for sustained and constructive engagement between the United States and Iran following recent talks that ended without a formal agreement.

Speaking through his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, Guterres acknowledged that while negotiations held in Islamabad did not yield a breakthrough, they marked a meaningful step toward renewed dialogue. “Given the deeply rooted differences, an agreement cannot be reached overnight,” Dujarric said, adding that the Secretary-General strongly encourages both sides to continue discussions in a constructive manner.

The UN chief emphasised that diplomacy remains the only viable path forward, especially after weeks of heightened tensions and destruction in the region. “It is clear that there is no military solution to the current conflict,” the statement noted, urging restraint and continued dialogue.

A key concern raised by the UN relates to maritime security and global trade disruptions, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most vital shipping lanes. The Secretary-General stressed that all parties must respect freedom of navigation in accordance with international law, warning that disruptions in this corridor have far-reaching consequences beyond the immediate conflict zone.

The Strait, located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, is a critical artery for global energy supplies and commercial shipping. Recent disturbances have already begun to impact international markets, contributing to economic uncertainty and rising costs across sectors.

According to the UN, interruptions in the flow of goods such as fertilisers and essential inputs are exacerbating food insecurity in vulnerable regions. These disruptions are also driving up the cost of living worldwide, affecting fuel prices, transportation, and supply chains.

The situation has also placed significant strain on maritime workers. The UN highlighted that nearly 20,000 seafarers remain stranded aboard vessels in the Persian Gulf, facing increasing hardships as tensions persist.

The developments come amid the United States’ decision to enforce a blockade on ships entering and leaving Iranian ports, a move that has further heightened concerns over regional stability and global trade flows.

In this context, Guterres reiterated the urgent need for de-escalation, dialogue, and adherence to international norms. He stressed that maintaining open sea lanes and ensuring humanitarian considerations remain paramount as the international community watches closely.
