Serchhip District Special Cell Reviews Solid Waste Management Rules 2026

Serchhip, June 2026: A Special Cell meeting on Solid Waste Management (SWM) was held in Serchhip district on Monday under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Paul L. Khuma. The meeting reviewed ongoing initiatives and discussed future measures for effective waste management in line with the Supreme Court’s directives issued on May 5, 2026, concerning solid waste management.

Deputy Commissioner Paul L. Khuma stated that Serchhip district has been actively implementing the provisions of the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026. He emphasized that failure to comply with the rules would be treated as a violation of the Supreme Court’s directions, and strict action would be taken against offenders. He urged citizens to actively participate in maintaining cleanliness and to comply with the regulations. He also called upon community leaders, local bodies, and all concerned government departments to discharge their responsibilities effectively as mandated under the rules.

The meeting reviewed the formation of Village Solid Waste Management Committees (VSWMCs) across different villages in the district, the responsibilities of Village Councils (VCs), and the actions being taken by various departments under the Special Cell. Discussions were also held on future strategies to strengthen waste management practices.

Under the SWM Rules, 2026, waste must be segregated into four categories: Wet Waste (biodegradable waste), Dry Waste (non-biodegradable waste), Sanitary Waste (including diapers, sanitary pads, and similar items), and Special Care Waste (such as paint containers, hazardous medicines, and electronic waste). Waste Segregation and Management Centres for biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste are being established at various locations.

The administration has directed that waste should be disposed of only at designated sites. Open dumping and burning of waste in public areas will be strictly prohibited under the new regulations.
