Sports Minister Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar Discusses Hockey Development
Aizawl : Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar, Minister of State for Sports & Youth Services, chaired a discussion on various initiatives for the development of hockey in Mizoram. The meeting was held at the Deputy Speaker’s room in the Assembly House. Present at the event were Deputy Speaker & Kolasib MLA Pu Lalfamkima, Lunglei West MLA Pu T. Lalhlimpuia, and South Tuipui MLA Pu Jeje Lalpekhlua, along with Olympian Lalremsiami and officials from Hockey Mizoram.
Minister Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar emphasized that hockey is a key sport for Mizos to excel at the Olympic level, and the Mizoram government is committed to its promotion. He stated, “India is aiming to host the 2036 Olympics, and we want Mizoram to play a significant role in it. The success of women’s hockey in Thenzawl, where Mizo players have gained recognition in the national team, is encouraging. We have great talent, and we believe hockey can be a game of success for India.” He also stressed the need for greater focus on men’s hockey development.
During the meeting, discussions were held on expanding hockey infrastructure. It was highlighted that:
- An Artificial Hockey Turf project is currently underway at Hauruang, Lunglei West, under the PMJVK scheme.
- The government is also planning to set up a hockey turf in Hnahthial.
- The hockey field at Kolasib Diakkawn has been designated for hockey training, with future plans for upgrading it with a turf.
- The hockey turfs at Muallungthu and Kawnpuia require proper maintenance.
Minister Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar further stated that under the “Empowering Mizoram Sports (EMS)” initiative, there will be a statewide focus on sports coaching and talent development, with hockey being one of the priority sports disciplines. He emphasized the importance of structured coaching programs for player development.
Olympian Lalremsiami expressed gratitude for the government’s initiatives and support for hockey players and associations. She stated, “It is encouraging to see the government recognizing and supporting us. If this continues, we will surely achieve greater success.”
Officials from Hockey Mizoram also conveyed their appreciation to the Sports Minister for organizing a productive discussion on hockey development in the state.
