So-called “Double-Engine” Govt is complete failure—while world is reaching for space, these people are busy digging graves: Sanjay Singh
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh launched a scathing attack on the central government in Rajya Sabha, pointing to its failure to curb the surge in communal violence and crime across the country. Citing a staggering 94% rise in communal riots in 2024 compared to 2019, Sanjay Singh called out the hate speeches and the BJP’s so-called “double engine” governance for fueling lawlessness.
The AAP Rajya Sabha MP highlighted that while BJP-ruled states like Gujarat, Bihar, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh are witnessing a continuous rise in crime, Punjab—under a single-engine government—has managed to bring crime rates down. Sanjay Singh further aimed at Home Minister Amit Shah, stating that despite Delhi’s security being under the Union Home Ministry, the national capital has become a crime hub, exposing the government’s failure to maintain law and order.
AAP MP Sanjay Singh, speaking in Rajya Sabha on Friday, exposed the failure of BJP’s “double-engine” governments in controlling crime across the country. Citing official NCRB data, he questioned the central government’s accountability, highlighting alarming crime rates in states where both the Centre and state governments are under BJP rule.
“If we talk about crime, violence, terror, and fear in the country, we must assess it state-wise. The Prime Minister tells people during election campaigns to form double-engine governments, promising them security. But when crime rises in these states instead of decreasing, the central government’s accountability doubles,” said Sanjay Singh.
The AAP Rajya Sabha MP presented official data showing that the country recorded 58 lakh crimes in total. In Bihar, a BJP-led “double-engine” government reported 2,57,512 crimes in 2020, 2.82 lakh in 2021, and 3,47,835 in 2022. Similarly, Gujarat saw 6,99,619 cases in 2020, 7,31,738 in 2021, and 5,24,105 in 2022, while Haryana recorded 1,92,395 in 2020, 2,06,431 in 2021, and 2,42,849 in 2022.
“Haryana has a smaller population than Punjab, yet Haryana recorded 2,42,849 crimes in 2022, while Punjab, where the AAP runs a single-engine government, recorded only 73,625 cases. If the “double-engine” government was truly working, why is crime rising in BJP-ruled states?” Sanjay Singh pointed out.
He further highlighted that Uttar Pradesh, another BJP-ruled state, recorded 6,57,925 crimes in 2020, 6,08,082 in 2021, and 7,53,675 in 2022.
Sanjay Singh also exposed the deteriorating law and order in Union Territories, where the central government has direct control. “Delhi is the national capital, home to the President, Prime Minister, Vice President, and Union Ministers. Yet, crime here is skyrocketing. Delhi recorded 2,66,070 crimes in 2020, 3,06,389 in 2021, and 3,20,275 in 2022. What does this say about the BJP’s governance?” he asked.
He also pointed to Jammu & Kashmir’s crime data, where cases rose from 28,911 in 2020 to 31,675 in 2021, slightly dropping to 30,197 in 2022. While FIR numbers can be debated, murder cases cannot be manipulated. He provided a city-wise breakdown of homicides in BJP-ruled states, citing 70 murders in Ahmedabad in 2020, 97 in 2021, and 100 in 2022, 95 murders in Jaipur in 2020, 118 in 2021, and 132 in 2022, 41 murders in Kanpur in 2020, 48 in 2021, and 81 in 2022, and 116 murders in Surat in 2020, 121 in 2021, and 100 in 2022.
“Delhi, which is under the direct control of the Union Home Minister, recorded 461 murders in 2020, 454 in 2021, and 501 in 2022. Today, the capital has become a hub of crime. Women are being gang-raped and dragged for kilometers on roads. Murders are happening inside courtrooms. Elderly couples are being killed in their homes. If you cannot manage law and order in the capital, how will you secure the country?” Sanjay Singh asked.
Citing NCRB data, Sanjay Singh revealed a 4% increase in crimes against women, with 4,45,256 cases in 2022, an 8% rise in crimes against children, with 1,62,449 cases, a 13% jump in atrocities against Dalits, with 57,582 cases, and a 14% increase in crimes against Scheduled Tribes, with 10,064 cases. “These figures scream that the country is not safe in BJP’s hands. Double-engine governments have failed. Your so-called double engine has become a wrecked engine that no longer works,” he declared.
The AAP Rajya Sabha MP also highlighted a 94% increase in communal riots between 2019 and 2024, blaming the BJP’s divisive politics for the surge. “While the world is reaching space and advancing technology, you are busy digging up graves and searching for temples inside mosques. Your own government protects historical sites like the Taj Mahal, Red Fort, and railway stations built by the British, yet BJP leaders talk about demolishing them. Are you now planning to destroy Delhi’s railway stations, bridges, and roads too?” he asked.
Sanjay Singh challenged the BJP’s selective reading of history, demanding they also teach about Mahad, where Dalits were denied access to drinking water. “Was it Muslims who forced Dalits to wear pots around their necks, who stopped them from eating alongside upper castes? Who barred Dalits from entering temples while animals were allowed to drink from the same water sources they were denied? This country has had Narendra Modi as PM for 11 years and Amit Shah as Home Minister. If you claim illegal Bangladeshi immigrants are entering Delhi, how are they crossing multiple BJP-ruled states like West Bengal, Tripura, Assam, Jharkhand, and Bihar without being stopped? Home Minister, take responsibility,” he said.
