Central Government Removes 20% Export Duty on Onions

Mumbai : In a major relief for onion farmers in Maharashtra, the Central Government has decided to remove the 20% export duty on onions, effective April 1, 2025. An official notification regarding this decision has been issued. This move is expected to benefit millions of onion farmers across the state.
Welcoming the decision, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, and the entire Union Cabinet for their prompt action.
Deputy CM Ajit Pawar emphasized the significance of this decision for Maharashtra’s farmers, stating:
“The removal of the 20% export duty on onions will now enable farmers to get better prices for their produce. To address this issue, I had personally discussed it with Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, urging immediate intervention. Recognizing the challenges faced by farmers, he took the necessary initiative to resolve the matter.”
He further reiterated the Maharashtra Government’s commitment to farmers’ welfare, assuring that more farmer-friendly decisions will be taken in the future.
