US Probes Potential Iranian LPG Shipments via Adani’s Mundra Port

US prosecutors are examining whether Indian billionaire Gautam Adani’s companies imported Iranian liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) into India through the Mundra port in Gujarat, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported Monday. The US Justice Department is scrutinizing the operations of several LPG tankers that allegedly transported Iranian cargo to Adani Enterprises. According to sources cited by the WSJ, these tankers exhibited characteristics often associated with vessels evading sanctions, such as turning off transponders and altering their identification details while traveling between the Gulf and Mundra.

In response, the Adani Group dismissed any connection to Iranian LPG as “baseless and mischievous.” A company spokesperson told the WSJ that none of its ports handled Iranian-origin cargo or Iranian-owned vessels, and it denied any deliberate involvement in sanctions evasion. “Adani categorically denies any deliberate involvement in sanctions evasion or trade involving Iranian-origin LPG,” the spokesperson stated. “Furthermore, we are not aware of any investigation by US authorities on this subject.”

Earlier in May, former US President Donald Trump ordered a complete halt on all purchases of Iranian oil and petrochemical products, warning that secondary sanctions would be imposed immediately on any entity found trading with Iran. If confirmed, the probe into Adani’s operations would arrive months after US authorities indicted Adani and his nephew Sagar Adani on charges of paying bribes to secure power supply contracts and misleading American investors during fundraising efforts in the United States. The Adani Group characterized these allegations as “baseless” and pledged to pursue all available legal remedies.

The WSJ investigation underscores growing US scrutiny of international energy transactions and the enforcement of sanctions against Iran. As the Justice Department reviews tanker logs, shipping records, and port documentation, the outcome could have significant repercussions for the Adani Group’s global logistics and shipping networks.
