CM Yogi unveils major boost for KGMU, inaugurates and lays foundation of 7 projects worth ₹941 crore
Lucknow : King George Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, has added a remarkable chapter to its 120-year legacy, setting a new benchmark in medical education and healthcare services. On Monday, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for seven major projects worth ₹941 crore on the KGMU campus.
During his visit, the Chief Minister met patients in the wards to check on their well-being and held discussions with doctors about future healthcare expansion plans. Addressing the gathering, CM Yogi described KGMU not merely as an institution, but as a symbol of a rich medical legacy and a beacon of national service. He highlighted that over its 120-year journey, KGMU has achieved significant milestones, from battling past pandemics to leading the fight against the global COVID-19 crisis.
The Chief Minister noted that KGMU played a pivotal role during the COVID-19 outbreak, becoming the first institution in Uttar Pradesh to initiate testing. He said, “It was here that testing for the first 100 suspected COVID-19 patients began, marking the start of the state’s timely and effective pandemic response.”
He added that the university has not only pioneered medical advancements during critical times but is now embracing technology to prepare for the future. “These ₹941 crore projects represent more than just infrastructure development, they mark the beginning of a new era in our journey towards a ‘Healthy Uttar Pradesh, Strong India,’” CM Yogi said.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the state-of-the-art Orthopaedic Super Speciality Block and the new Cardiology Wing at King George Medical University (KGMU) on Monday. He also laid the foundation stone for several key projects, including a 500-bed trauma center, a new General Surgery Department building, an administrative complex, and a patient utility complex.
CM Yogi termed this a landmark moment for any medical institution, emphasizing that the launch of projects worth nearly ₹1,000 crore reflects the double-engine government’s strong commitment to building world-class healthcare infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh.
Highlighting the nation’s progress, CM Yogi said, “Over the past 11 years, India has achieved unprecedented growth across all sectors, including healthcare.”
He noted that the number of AIIMS institutes across the country has increased to 23, and Uttar Pradesh is also making significant strides. The state’s vision of establishing 75 medical colleges in 75 districts is becoming a reality. He added, “In 2024 alone, MBBS courses have commenced in 17 new medical colleges, 13 of which are government, marking a major transformation in the state’s healthcare system aimed at benefiting the common man.”
The Chief Minister further noted the remarkable expansion of healthcare services in Purvanchal. He said. “Earlier, advanced treatments for diseases like dengue and encephalitis were limited to Lucknow, but today, facilities such as platelets and dialysis are available in every district.”
CM Yogi also announced the setting up of a KGMU satellite center in Balrampur, saying it’s time for metro-level healthcare services to reach smaller cities. This step will ease the burden on major hospitals in Lucknow and allow patients to receive treatment closer to home.
He highlighted a collaborative initiative to establish a Center of Excellence in medical technology in partnership with IIT Kanpur. The aim, he said, is to involve institutions like KGMU and SGPGI in pioneering research that would help make India self-reliant in healthcare technology.
Expressing satisfaction after interacting with patients, CM Yogi said that patient trust is the most valuable asset of any institution. “It’s not a small thing when a patient’s confidence itself becomes a part of their healing. I saw that trust in the eyes of patients at KGMU,” he remarked.
Concluding his address, the Chief Minister urged doctors and healthcare administrators to remain forward-thinking and stay updated with changing times. “Whether it’s an individual or an institution, those who fail to evolve with time are left behind. But those who move forward become a source of inspiration,” he said.
