President Trump Embarks on High-Stakes Asia Tour Amid Escalating Trade War with China

Key Points:

  • Trump’s Asia tour begins Saturday in Kuala Lumpur and includes stops in Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea.
  • The trip comes amid rising US-China tensions over tariffs, rare earth exports, and drug trade.
  • Trump-Xi summit set for October 30 in Gyeongju, South Korea, on the sidelines of the APEC forum.
  • Several ASEAN nations impacted by recent US tariffs; Thailand and Cambodia to sign peace accord.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi to participate virtually in the ASEAN summit.
  • Trump’s agenda: securing investment, trade deals, and projecting leadership in Asia-Pacific politics.

New York, Oct 2025: US President Donald Trump is set to arrive in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, marking the start of a critical three-nation Asia tour that will take him to Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea. The tour, coming amid an intensifying trade war with China, is aimed at reshaping economic partnerships and reinforcing US influence in the Asia-Pacific region.

While several trade and investment agreements are expected to be signed across the region, all eyes will be on Trump’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea on October 30, where the two leaders are expected to address mounting tensions over tariffs, rare earth exports, technology restrictions, and illicit drug flows.

Speaking to reporters before his departure, Trump struck an optimistic tone, saying, “I think we are going to come out very well and everyone’s going to be very happy.”

The much-anticipated Trump–Xi meeting will take place on the sidelines of the 21-member Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Gyeongju, a historic city in South Korea. Before that, Trump will participate in the ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday and Monday.

The ASEAN summit will see participation from the leaders of its ten member countries, alongside key dialogue partners such as Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa, China’s Li Qiang, Japan’s Sanae Takaichi, Australia’s Anthony Albanese, and Canada’s Mike Carney.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, who was invited, will join the proceedings virtually. Trump’s delegation includes Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

Several ASEAN economies are still reeling from the steep tariffs imposed by Washington in August, with Laos and Myanmar hit hardest by 40% duties. The US President is also expected to witness a peace accord between Thailand and Cambodia, whose border dispute was settled earlier this year with Trump’s mediation — a move that reinforces his image as a “global peacemaker.”

The APEC summit, scheduled immediately after Trump’s Japan visit, will unfold under the looming shadow of the Trump–Xi dialogue. Reports suggest that Trump may skip the formal leaders’ session of the summit and instead focus on bilateral engagements with key allies and trade partners.

China recently threatened sweeping export controls on rare earth minerals, a sector in which it enjoys a near-monopoly. In retaliation, Washington has warned of imposing 100% additional tariffs, potentially raising total duties on Chinese imports to as much as 157%.

Trump has demanded that Beijing lift restrictions on rare earth exports, resume soybean purchases, and curb the trafficking of fentanyl — a synthetic opioid that has contributed to the US drug crisis.

An agreement at the Gyeongju meeting will depend on whether the two leaders can reach common ground on these key trade disputes. Trump expressed confidence, stating, “When we finish our meetings in South Korea, China and I will have a really fair and great trade deal together.”

In Japan, where Trump will spend three days from Monday to Wednesday, discussions will center on trade, technology cooperation, and defense partnerships. The President is also scheduled to visit the Imperial Palace for an audience with Emperor Naruhito.

Interestingly, South Korea may confer on Trump its highest civilian honor, the Grand Order of Mugunghwa (Eternal Blossom), in recognition of his diplomatic outreach efforts in the region.

Speculation had earlier circulated that Trump might meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during this trip. However, that possibility was ruled out after Pyongyang conducted ballistic missile tests on Wednesday, reaffirming its defiance of international norms.

The APEC summit’s theme — “Building a Sustainable Tomorrow: Connect, Innovate, Prosper” — is expected to feature prominently in the discussions, although Trump’s well-known aversion to climate-linked terminology such as “sustainable” suggests he may focus primarily on economic cooperation and private investment.

As Trump’s Asia tour unfolds, it is seen not merely as a diplomatic mission but as a strategic move to reassert American leadership in Asia, challenge China’s economic dominance, and reshape global trade alignments in the face of escalating geopolitical competition.

Team Maverick.
