PM Modi Conferred Ethiopia’s Highest Civilian Honour During Historic Visit
Addis Ababa, Dec 2025 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi was awarded Ethiopia’s highest civilian honour, the “Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia”, during his first bilateral visit to the country.
The award was presented at a special ceremony at the Addis International Convention Centre by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, recognising Modi’s exceptional efforts in strengthening India-Ethiopia ties and his leadership on the global stage.
Expressing gratitude, PM Modi described it as a privilege to receive the honour from one of the world’s most ancient civilisations. He thanked Prime Minister Abiy and the Ethiopian people for the gesture and lauded Abiy’s initiatives promoting national unity, sustainability, and inclusive development.
Highlighting the importance of knowledge in nation-building, PM Modi noted that Indian teachers have contributed to Ethiopia’s progress for over a century. He dedicated the award to generations of Indians and Ethiopians who nurtured bilateral relations and extended his heartfelt thanks on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians.
PM Modi emphasised that the conferment marks a milestone in India-Ethiopia relations and strengthens the positive agenda of the Global South.
The ceremony underscored the growing strategic, cultural, and developmental cooperation between the two nations, with PM Modi reaffirming India’s commitment to supporting Ethiopia’s development initiatives and fostering closer ties in education, technology, and economic collaboration.
This historic recognition reflects the deepening friendship and shared vision for progress between India and Ethiopia, highlighting both countries’ commitment to mutual growth and global partnership.
