Zubeen Garg’s Wife Seeks Truth Through Law, Breaks Silence After Singapore Court Hearing
Guwahati, Jan 2026 : For the first time since details surrounding the death of Assam’s iconic singer Zubeen Garg were presented before a Singapore court, his wife Garima Saikia Garg on Thursday issued a detailed public statement, asserting that the family’s pursuit of truth has been lawful, determined and spread across multiple jurisdictions.
Her statement came a day after proceedings in the Singapore Coroner’s Court, where it was stated that the 53-year-old singer died by drowning while swimming near Lazarus Island on September 19, 2025. According to testimony cited by The Straits Times, the court was informed that the singer had allegedly consumed alcohol and declined to wear a life jacket before entering the sea.
In a comprehensive Facebook post, Garima Garg said the family felt morally compelled to place verified facts before the people of Assam and relevant authorities “with transparency, dignity and respect for truth,” amid growing public concern and lingering questions over the circumstances of the incident.
She revealed that the family was left shattered and emotionally immobilised in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, which delayed the initiation of legal steps. Grief and trauma, she said, made it impossible to act swiftly during the early days following her husband’s death.
However, she noted that the situation changed after certain videos from the yacht surfaced on social media, raising serious doubts about the sequence of events that led to the singer’s death. In response, the family promptly lodged a First Information Report (FIR) to trigger a formal investigation.
Garima Garg clarified that the Singapore authorities had initiated legal proceedings suo motu soon after the incident. The Indian High Commission in Singapore, she said, played a key role in coordinating medical and legal procedures, including the post-mortem examination. During this phase, the family consciously refrained from making public statements in order to protect the integrity of the investigation.
She further stated that once her health condition allowed, an FIR was filed with the Assam Criminal Investigation Department (CID), following which a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted to probe the matter thoroughly.
After months of investigation, the Assam Police filed a charge sheet exceeding 2,500 pages, invoking sections related to murder, she said, underscoring the seriousness with which the case has been examined at the state level.
Referring to the coroner’s hearing in Singapore, Garima Garg said the family placed several critical questions before the court. These included concerns about the planning of the yacht trip, adherence to safety protocols, the singer’s medical history, the response time following the incident, and the rationale behind ruling out foul play at an early stage.
Appealing to both the Central and Assam governments to closely monitor the proceedings, she emphasised that the family is seeking only a complete, fair and transparent examination of the events that led to Zubeen Garg’s death. She concluded by saying that uncovering the truth is owed not only to the family, but also to the people of Assam, for whom the singer remains a deeply cherished cultural figure.
