₹244.87 crore project to have 77 critical-care beds, nine high-tech operation theatres and 48 OPD rooms in a seven-storey building

Project targeted for completion by 2028 under PMSSY Phase-IV
New Delhi, September 2026 : The Delhi Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta, has approved the construction of a 250-bed Super-Speciality-cum-Trauma Block at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in Dilshad Garden, East Delhi. The project will cost ₹244.87 crore. The new block will be built within the existing GTB Hospital campus, eliminating the need to purchase additional land. It will be constructed under Phase-IV of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said GTB Hospital is the only major government hospital in East Delhi and continues to face a heavy patient load. Almost all its beds remain occupied. In view of this, there was a need to expand modern trauma facilities for accident victims and critical emergency cases. Once the new block becomes operational, critical patients will have access to 24x7 emergency and trauma care, specialist treatment, diagnostics, surgery and intensive care at one place. The Delhi Government aims to expand the capacity of government hospitals while ensuring that people receive better and timely medical care when they need it.
Seven-storey building with 250 beds and a 72-bed ICU
Spread over around 22,550 square metres, the block will comprise a basement, ground floor and six upper floors. It will have 250 beds, 48 specialist OPD rooms and nine modern operation theatres. The basement will house a blood bank and laboratory. The ground floor will have a 24x7 emergency department along with diagnostic facilities such as CT scan, MRI and X-ray. A 72-bed ICU will be located on the second floor, while the fourth and fifth floors will have 175 general and private ward beds. The sixth floor will house offices, classrooms and a laboratory for the training of doctors.
Of the 250 beds, 20 will be for emergency care, five for the Burns ICU, 70 for ICU care, four for isolation, 22 for pre- and post-surgery care, 102 for general wards and 25 in private rooms. The block will offer various specialist services, including neurology, orthopaedics, dermatology and dental care. A total of 77 critical-care beds will be available for critically ill patients.
Diagnostic and surgical facilities along with 24x7 trauma care
The new block will provide round-the-clock trauma treatment for accident victims and critical emergency cases. Diagnostic facilities, including CT scan, MRI, X-ray, ultrasound and laboratory services, will be available. Nine modern operation theatres will be built for surgeries. A blood bank with full blood-storage facilities will also be established.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said timely treatment is crucial in serious accident cases. The new block will bring together all essential facilities, from emergency care and diagnostics to intensive care and surgery, in an integrated manner. This will expand East Delhi’s capacity to treat serious accident and emergency cases. A committee comprising senior officials from the Central and Delhi governments will be constituted to monitor the project. The committee will meet every three months to review the progress of construction. The hospital is targeted to become operational in 2028.
Hospital expansion under PMSSY Phase-IV
The Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) is a Government of India scheme under which modern and improved medical facilities are developed in government hospitals. Under the scheme, the Central and state governments jointly bear the cost of projects. The proposed Super-Speciality-cum-Trauma Block at GTB Hospital will also be constructed under this scheme.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the new block at GTB Hospital will expand medical facilities for serious accident and emergency cases for the people of East Delhi. With 250 new beds, 24x7 trauma care, ICU facilities, operation theatres, modern diagnostic facilities, specialist services and a blood bank, the hospital’s treatment capacity will be strengthened. The Delhi Government is continuously working to further strengthen the public healthcare system and ensure better medical facilities for people when they need them.
