Students will be able to focus on their studies and dreams without worrying about accommodation: CM Rekha Gupta
New Delhi, September 2026 : Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta said that the Delhi government would build hostels for 10,000 students studying in colleges and universities across the capital. The hostels will be constructed through various departments, and land will also be acquired for the purpose wherever necessary. She said ensuring safe, convenient and affordable accommodation for both female and male students was a priority for the government. Hostel construction is already under way in some Delhi government universities and institutions, and the scope of the initiative will now be expanded in view of the growing need.
All students to benefit
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that Delhi was not only the national capital but also a major education hub. A large number of young people come to Delhi from different states to pursue higher education. After securing admission to colleges and universities, one of the biggest challenges they face is arranging safe and affordable accommodation. The government is working to find a permanent solution to this problem.
Efforts are also under way to provide hostel facilities to students studying in any college or university in Delhi, in addition to those studying in Delhi government universities and institutions. The government will also conduct a survey of colleges that have sufficient space for hostel construction. The process of constructing hostels will be expedited after suitable locations are identified.
Hostels to be built under PPP model, with focus on facilities and maintenance
The Chief Minister said hostels would also be constructed under the public-private partnership (PPP) model. This would help speed up construction while ensuring proper maintenance and the continued provision of better facilities for students. She said the government’s responsibility would not end with the construction of hostels. It would also ensure that students’ safety, comfort and essential needs were taken care of. The Chief Minister said hostel construction was under way or had been proposed at several institutions, including Ambedkar University, Dhirpur, G.B. Pant Engineering College and Polytechnic, Indira Gandhi Hospital and Medical College, and Delhi Sports University.
She said the Health Department, Higher Education Department and Women and Child Development Department, among other concerned departments, would also be involved in hostel construction. The Chief Minister said meetings were being held with various departments in this regard. Suitable locations were being identified, and a draft policy on hostels was also being prepared. The government was focusing on understanding students’ actual needs and identifying the facilities that should be made available to them in hostels.
‘Parents should be assured, while students focus on their dreams’
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the government wanted to build hostels where parents of students coming from different states could leave their children without any worry. Students should not have to worry about where they would stay, what the living environment would be like or how food arrangements would be made. They should have access to a safe and comfortable environment so that they could fully focus on their studies, their future and their dreams.
The Chief Minister said every student who comes to Delhi to study brings not only their family’s hopes but also a dream for their own future. It was the government’s responsibility to provide them with a better environment for education and free them from worries about accommodation. The Delhi government stood with its students and was committed to providing them with a safe, comfortable and better environment.
