Chennai, September 2026 : Political parties supporting the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led Tamil Nadu government have formally named their coalition the “Secular Social Justice Victory Alliance” and chosen Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay as its leader.
The decision was taken during the second round of consultations among alliance partners at the TVK headquarters in Panaiyur near Chennai on Wednesday. The meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Vijay, began at 4 p.m. and continued for nearly 90 minutes.
The formal naming of the alliance is expected to give the coalition a distinct political identity and strengthen coordination among the parties supporting the TVK government. The partners discussed mechanisms for consultation, cooperation and joint political engagement, with the alliance seeking to build a common platform around secularism, social justice and governance.
TVK emerged as the single largest party in the recently concluded Assembly election, winning 108 seats. However, it fell short of the majority required to form the government independently and subsequently secured the support of several parties that were earlier constituents of the DMK-led alliance.
These include the Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).
While VCK and IUML subsequently joined the Vijay-led ministry, the CPI and CPI-M chose to extend support to the TVK government from outside.
The process of giving a formal structure and identity to the coalition began with its first consultative meeting, held at a private hotel in Chennai’s Kovalam on July 1. Representatives of the Congress, VCK, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) and IUML participated in that meeting, while the CPI and CPI-M, which had opted for outside support, stayed away.
For Wednesday’s second meeting, senior TVK functionaries and Ministers Anand, Aadhav Arjuna and Nirmal Kumar personally invited representatives of all supporting parties. However, the CPI and CPI-M had announced beforehand that they would not participate in the deliberations.
Several prominent leaders from the alliance attended the meeting. Congress was represented by Manickam Tagore, MP Praveen Chakravarty and Congress Legislature Party leader and MP Tharahai Cuthbert.
MDMK General Secretary Vaiko and MP Durai Vaiko also took part in the discussions. IUML National President K.M. Kader Mohideen and Minister Shahjahan represented their party.
VCK President and MP Thol. Thirumavalavan Ravikumar and MP Sinthanai Selvan were also present.
The alliance’s new name is intended to reflect the ideological priorities shared by its constituents while providing a unified identity for future political campaigns and electoral exercises across Tamil Nadu.
The coalition partners are expected to focus on strengthening coordination and maintaining regular consultations as they work together to support the TVK-led government. The alliance will seek to project a common political vision centred on secular values, social justice and effective governance under the leadership of Chief Minister Vijay.
