ICAR-CIFRI Reinforces Soil–Fisheries Synergy through Intensive Drive on Balanced Fertilization and the National Bhumi Suposhan Campaign

April 2026 : In a strong endorsement of sustainable resource management, the ICAR–Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute actively participated in both the Intensive Campaign on Balanced Use of Fertilizers and the nationwide Bhumi Suposhan & Samrakshan Jan Abhiyan, reinforcing the vital link between soil health and inland fisheries productivity.

Aligning with the national vision of restoring soil fertility and promoting balanced nutrient use, ICAR-CIFRI advanced an integrated approach connecting soil, water, and fish systems. The institute emphasized that healthy pond and wetland soils are fundamental to nutrient cycling, plankton production, and enhanced fish yields, thereby ensuring ecological balance and livelihood sustainability.

Dr. Pradip Dey, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, stated, “Imbalanced fertilizer use in catchment areas accelerates soil degradation and nutrient runoff, adversely impacting aquatic ecosystem health. A convergent, science-based nutrient management approach—anchored in soil test–based recommendations and Soil Health Cards—is essential. Soil rejuvenation must focus on enhancing organic matter through green manuring and promoting Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) with organic inputs and bio-fertilizers, alongside balanced application of NPK, SSP, and micronutrients. Indiscriminate use of urea and DAP must be avoided to ensure long-term sustainability.”

Heads of Divisions and Experts highlighted the importance of pond bottom soil quality, while training programmes and field interactions facilitated dissemination of practical, science-based solutions.

Reaffirming its commitment, ICAR-CIFRI continues to play a pivotal role in integrating soil and water health for sustainable fisheries, contributing to national priorities of food security, environmental conservation, and enhanced rural livelihoods. The initiative reflects a holistic pathway where nurturing soil health underpins not only resilient agriculture but also a thriving inland fisheries sector.

Dr. Aparna Roy, In-Charge and Shri. Ganesh Chandra, Scientist, Training & Extension Unit, ICAR-CIFRI, coordinated the programme. The programme witnessed active participation of  fishers from Kanthi, fostering grassroots engagement.
