Precautionary Measures Taken in Tamil Nadu Urban Housing Development Projects Ahead of Northeast Monsoon
Following the directives of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, precautionary steps have been taken in the urban housing development projects across the state in anticipation of the northeast monsoon. In Chennai, 1.20 lakh multi-storey housing units across 209 project areas are under review to ensure readiness. To address concerns of the residents, a 24-hour control room with a helpline (044-29862104) has been set up at the department’s office to respond to emergencies.
Necessary equipment such as pumps and water suction machines have been prepared in the project areas to handle potential waterlogging. Diesel generators have been installed as backup power sources in areas with electric lifts. Additionally, for residents of structurally compromised buildings, alternative arrangements have been made at relief camps, schools, and community centers set up by the Greater Chennai Corporation and district administration. The authorities have ensured adequate provisions for food and essential items for those relocated.
In areas like Semmenchery and Okkium Thoraipakkam – Kannagi Nagar, measures to mitigate the effects of heavy rain include deploying 10 motors with 10 hp capacity, two generators with 125 kVA capacity, and three water suction machines (JCBs) to manage any emergency. Drinking water supply arrangements have also been made for the housing units.
Coordination with the revenue departments of Chennai, Chengalpattu, and other districts will continue for any post-rainfall measures. To address the monsoon’s impact effectively, urban development officials are on duty round the clock in rotational shifts in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, and Tiruvallur districts.
