Tawang Gears Up for ‘Queen of High-Altitude Runs’ Marathon
Preparations are underway for the second Tawang International Marathon, set for October 24, according to defense spokesperson Lt Col Mahendra Rawat. The marathon, known as the ‘Queen of High-Altitude Runs,’ will be co-hosted by the Indian Army and the Arunachal Pradesh government in the picturesque border town of Tawang. It aims to strengthen civil-military relations and promote tourism in the region.

Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced in July that the marathon would become an annual international event. During the launch of its official website, www.tawangmarathon, he expressed commitment to supporting the race’s growth. The state government has allocated a grant of Rs 2 crore for this year’s event, which includes a prize pool of Rs 60 lakh.
So far, over 4,500 runners have registered for the full and half marathons, as well as 10 km and 5 km races. The total number of participants is expected to exceed 5,000. The marathon is anticipated to give a boost to mountain sports and adventure tourism, enhancing the local economy.
The marathon will start from Tawang Stadium, flagged off by Khandu, with senior military officials like Gajraj Corps GOC Lt Gen Gambhir Singh and Ball of Fire Division GOC Maj Gen KS Grewal in attendance. The event will also feature Army equipment displays and cultural performances.
