Nobel Laureate Mario Vargas Llosa Passes Away at 89
Renowned Peruvian author and Nobel Prize winner Mario Vargas Llosa passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on Sunday in Lima, Peru. The announcement was made by his family through a heartfelt message shared on social media platform X.
Vargas Llosa’s death marks the symbolic end of Latin America’s golden generation of literature. As the last surviving figure from a revolutionary era in Latin American storytelling, his departure closes a chapter that once saw the rise of global literary icons like Gabriel García Márquez and Julio Cortázar.
“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our father, Mario Vargas Llosa, surrounded by his family in Lima,” wrote his eldest son, Álvaro Vargas Llosa. The statement was co-signed by his siblings Gonzalo and Morgana. The family also confirmed that, as per the writer’s wishes, there will be no public ceremony. His body will be cremated privately, allowing the family to mourn in peace.
Born into a middle-class family in Peru, Vargas Llosa rose to international acclaim with works that vividly captured Latin American society and politics. His early novels such as The Time of the Hero (La ciudad y los perros, 1963) and Conversation in the Cathedral (Conversación en la catedral, 1969) remain some of the most powerful critiques of authoritarianism in literature.
Over the years, Vargas Llosa’s works were translated into nearly 30 languages, and his literary achievements earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2010. A true global intellectual, he spent years living in Paris and in 2016 became the first foreign author to be included in France’s prestigious Pleiade literary series during his lifetime. He was later inducted into the French Academy in 2021.
Peru’s President Dina Boluarte paid tribute to the late author, calling him “an illustrious Peruvian for the ages.” She praised his literary genius and described his body of work as an “enduring legacy” for future generations.
Vargas Llosa had recently returned to Lima, where he celebrated his 89th birthday in March. Despite declining health, he remained connected to the places that inspired his last novels, Five Corners (2016) and I Dedicate My Silence to You (2023).
Though his views at times sparked controversy among fellow intellectuals, Vargas Llosa’s contributions to literature remain indelible. His passing is not just a national loss for Peru, but a moment of mourning for the literary world.
