UP Launches India’s First Jungle Safari Train with Vistadome Coaches
Lucknow – Adventure seekers have a new reason to celebrate as Uttar Pradesh becomes the first state in India to introduce a Vistadome coach train service through its dense forests. The service, which runs from Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary to Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, offers tourists a thrilling jungle safari experience at an affordable fare of just ₹275.

Launched under the guidance of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, this initiative is a major step towards boosting eco-tourism and nature-based travel in the state. For the first time, tourists can enjoy a scenic train journey spanning 107 kilometers through the lush wilderness of Uttar Pradesh. The Vistadome coaches feature large glass windows and panoramic roofs that provide close-up views of forests, wildlife, and diverse ecosystems like wetlands, grasslands, farmlands, and woodlands.
The special train service currently operates on Saturdays and Sundays, with plans to extend it to all days of the week based on public response. This round-the-year service aims to promote tourism and generate local employment opportunities. The Uttar Pradesh Eco-Tourism Development Board is also working on a subsidized travel package from Lucknow to Katarniaghat to encourage more tourists.

The journey on this tourist train lasts about four and a half hours. It runs between Bichia station in Bahraich and Mailani station in Lakhimpur Kheri, stopping at nine stations along the way, including Manjhra Purab, Khairatiya Bandh Road, Tikunia, Belrayan, Dudhwa, Palia Kalan, and Bhira Kheri. The return train departs from Mailani at 6:05 AM and reaches Bichia at 10:30 AM.
Prakhar Mishra, Director of Tourism, stated that the idea is to position the state’s forest areas—Dudhwa National Park, Katarniaghat, and Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary—as a single destination branded as “One Destination, Three Forests.” These areas have been integrated to offer visitors a seamless and thrilling nature experience through the Vistadome train.
Mishra emphasized that this initiative aligns with the vision of providing tourists with immersive, year-round nature trails and jungle safaris. The project not only supports conservation efforts but also contributes to rural development by empowering local communities. Homestay owners, resort operators, and travel agents are expected to benefit from the increased tourist footfall.
To further spread awareness and boost visibility, the tourism department is organizing curated tours for government school students under the Youth Tourism Club initiative. Additionally, FAM (familiarization) tours are being conducted for social media influencers and travel bloggers to promote the Vistadome experience online.
The initiative is gaining praise for its dual impact—enhancing tourist experiences and promoting environmental awareness. Through this innovative eco-tourism project, the Yogi government aims to position Uttar Pradesh as a prime destination for sustainable travel while taking a significant step toward achieving its “Green UP” vision.
