Thunderstorms Ahead in Bengal; Bay of Bengal Low-Pressure Likely by May 27

The east west trough which was formed now runs from the cyclonic circulation over Punjab & neighborhood to central Madhya Pradesh across south Haryana, upper air cyclonic circulation over northeast Madhya Pradesh adjoining southeast Uttar Pradesh at 1.5 km above mean sea level. Also, in presence of favourable wind pattern and moisture incursion from Bay of Bengal, enhanced thunderstorm with gusty winds accompanied with heavy rainfall activity likely over some districts of West Bengal and details warning for next five days as mentioned below.  

A low-pressure area is likely to form over west central and adjoining North Bay of Bengal around 27th

May, 2025 It is likely to aggravate during subsequent 02 days. Under its influence light to moderate

rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall likely to commence on 28th. May 2025 over coastal areas of West Bengal.  

Significant weather observed during the past 24 hours:

  • Gusty winds occurred at one or two places over North South 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Murshidabad, Paschim Bardhaman, Birbhum, Howrah, Purulia, Purba Medinipur districts of South Bengal with maximum wind speed between 31-74 kmph and Jalpaiguri, Coochbehar districts of North Bengal with maximum wind speed between 35-44 kmph.
  • Heavy to very heavy rainfall occurred at a few places over Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Darjeeling districts of North Bengal. Heavy rainfall occurred at one or two places over East Midnapore and South 24 Parganas districts of South Bengal.

22-05-2025 – Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed reaching 50-60 kmph), lightning, light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over Jhargram, West Midnapore, Purulia, West Burdwan and Birbhum districts with heavy rainfall (07-11 cm) likely to occur at one or two places over West Midnapore and Birbhum districts of South Bengal. Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed reaching 40-50 kmph), lightning, light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over the rest districts of South Bengal.

23-05-2025 – Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed reaching 50-60 kmph), lightning, light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over Jhargram, West Midnapore, East Midnapore and Hooghly districts with heavy rainfall (07-11 cm) likely to occur at one or two places over Hooghly district of South Bengal. Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed reaching 40-50 kmph), lightning, light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over the rest districts of South Bengal.

24-05-2025 to 27-05-2025 – Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed reaching 30-40 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of South Bengal.

28-05-2025 – Heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) likely to occur at one or two places over North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore and West Midnapore districts of South Bengal.

Warning for North Bengal:

22-05-2025 – Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed reaching 40-50 kmph), lightning and heavy rainfall (07-11 cm) likely to occur at one or two places over Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and North Dinajpur districts of North Bengal. Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed reaching 30-40 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over the rest districts with heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) likely to occur at one or two places over Kalimpong, Alipurduar and Coochbehar districts of North Bengal.

23-05-2025 to 26-05-2025 – Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed reaching 30-40 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of North Bengal.

Possible Impact for Thunderstorm & Lightning and Heavy rainfall:

1. Some damages of standing crops, vegetables and horticulture;

2. Possibility of lightning strike especially in open field;

3. Damage to loose/unsecured structure;

4. Traffic disruption in urban areas;  

5. Land slide over hilly area of Darjeeling & Kalimpong districts.
