CM Stalin Inaugurates Key Road and Housing Projects in Madurai

Under the Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Project, Chief Minister Thiru M.K. Stalin inaugurated key development works worth ₹499.08 crore today, including the upgraded four-lane road from Lalgudi–Ilasipettai–Thiruchengode–Ekarai road, a new road bridge in place of a low-level causeway at Palanganatham in Madurai district, and resettlement housing for tribal communities at Kalpakkam.

At a function held at the Secretariat in Chennai today (29.05.2025), Hon’ble Chief Minister Thiru M.K. Stalin inaugurated the following major projects:

  • A four-lane upgraded road stretching 11.15 km on the Lalgudi–Ilasipettai–Thiruchengode–Ekarai road, developed at a cost of ₹424.38 crore under the Chennai–Kanniyakumari Industrial Corridor project funded by the Asian Development Bank. This includes a two-lane elevated bypass road of 3.4 km at Pallipalayam to ease traffic disruptions caused by railway crossings.
  • A new road bridge of 730 meters at Palanganatham in Madurai district, constructed at a cost of ₹68.38 crore, replacing the previous low-level causeway that often caused delays during waterlogging.
  • A tribal resettlement housing project at Kalpakkam constructed at a cost of ₹6.32 crore for 41 families displaced during road development works in the Chengalpattu district. The housing project includes 41 homes with supporting infrastructure like roads, a community hall, a temple, a water tank, cement roads, children’s play area, drinking water, and electricity facilities.

These infrastructure improvements aim to enhance economic development, trade, mobility, and safety across the state. Over the past four years, Tamil Nadu has upgraded 16,500 km of roads, widened 2,130 km into four- or two-lane highways, improved over 5,000 km of rural roads, and constructed over 1,500 bridges.

These efforts reflect the government’s commitment to modern, safe, and inclusive road and housing infrastructure, especially for marginalized communities.

Also present at the event were Hon’ble Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development Thiru Udhayanidhi Stalin, Minister for Public Works and Highways Thiru E.V. Velu, and Minister for Information Technology and Digital Services Thiru Palanivel Thiagarajan, among other dignitaries.
