England Clinch Thriller at Lord’s, Take 2-1 Lead in Test Series

India fall short by 22 runs despite Jadeja’s lone resistance; series heads to Manchester for fourth Test

New Delhi – In a gripping contest at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, England edged past India by 22 runs to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match Test series. Chasing a modest target of 193 runs, India faltered under pressure and were bowled out for 170 on the final day, despite a valiant unbeaten 61 from Ravindra Jadeja.

India resumed Day 5 needing 135 runs with six wickets in hand. However, a disciplined English bowling attack dismantled the middle and lower order, leaving Jadeja stranded at one end. Key batters like Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Nitish Reddy failed to offer resistance against the seam and spin threat of the English attack.

The Indian innings had started shakily on Day 4, losing Yashasvi Jaiswal for a duck in the second over. Skipper Shubman Gill (6), Karun Nair (14), and nightwatchman Akash Deep (1) were all dismissed cheaply. The trend continued on Day 5, with wickets tumbling regularly and no significant partnerships forming to chase down the target.

Earlier, in England’s second innings, Joe Root top-scored with 40 runs, while Ben Stokes (33), Harry Brook (23), and Zak Crawley (22) added crucial contributions. England posted 192, setting India a tricky chase on a wearing pitch. Washington Sundar stood out with the ball for India, picking up 4 wickets, while Bumrah and Siraj bagged two each. Reddy and Akash Deep took one wicket apiece.

England’s bowling unit, led by Jofra Archer and Chris Woakes, applied consistent pressure, exploiting the conditions to perfection. Shoaib Bashir cleaned up the tail, taking the final wicket to seal the win.

With this victory, England go 2-1 up in the series, setting the stage for a high-stakes fourth Test scheduled to begin on July 23 in Manchester. For India, the defeat is a reminder of their batting frailties under pressure, and they will need to regroup quickly to stay alive in the series.

Despite Jadeja’s heroics, India were left ruing missed opportunities and a middle-order collapse that cost them a golden chance to win at Lord’s.
