Inauguration of Bio-Methanation Project at SamdoIi Road Solid Waste Facility by Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil
Launch of Suction and Jetting Machine with Water Recycling Vehicle
Sangli, Aug 2025 : The Bio-Methanation Project implemented through the Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad City Municipal Corporation with government funding, along with the launch of a Suction and Jetting Machine with Water Recycling Vehicle, was inaugurated by the State Minister for Higher and Technical Education, Parliamentary Affairs, and Guardian Minister of Sangli District, Chandrakant Patil.
Present on the occasion were MLA Sudhir Gadgil, Municipal Commissioner Satyam Gandhi, Additional Commissioner Rahul Rokade, Deputy Commissioner Smriti Patil, Special Executive Officer to the Guardian Minister Balasaheb Yadav, Health Officer Dr. Ravindra Tate, Property Superintendent Dhananjay Harshad, and others.
During the visit, Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil inspected the project, learned about it in detail, and remarked that the initiative is highly commendable.
Currently, within the jurisdiction of Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad Municipal Corporation, a Bio-Methanation Plant with a capacity of 10 tons per day has been set up at the SamdoIi Road Solid Waste Project site. The plant will process wet waste collected from hotels, restaurants, banquet halls, weekly markets, etc., as feedstock. The project was built at a cost of ₹3 crore under the Swachh Bharat Mission.
At present, 4–5 tons of wet waste from hotels is collected daily within the municipal limits, along with an additional 4–5 tons from the weekly market. This wet waste will be sent to the Bio-Methanation Plant, where it will be shredded and fed into an Anaerobic Digester. The gas generated will be collected in balloons, producing 50–60% pure methane gas, which will then be used for power generation. From this 10-ton-per-day waste, 450–500 m³ of biogas per day is expected to be produced, according to Health Officer Dr. Ravindra Tate and Environmental Engineer Ajit Gujarati.
The Government will also provide two vehicles to the Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad Municipal Corporation for cleaning sewers, underground drains, and septic tanks, ensuring the safety of sanitation workers. One such vehicle has already been received and was launched by Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil. The cost of manpower, fuel, and maintenance for this machine will be borne by the Government. The machine will operate in one shift (8 hours) daily, totaling 300 shifts per year. Funds for this machinery will be provided to the concerned local bodies from the state-level share of GST grants, stamp duty refunds, or Finance Commission funds, as informed by Executive Engineer Chidanand Kurne and Vinayak Jadhav.
