Battula Shivadhar Reddy Appointed New Telangana DGP
Hyderabad, Sept 2025 : The Telangana government has appointed senior IPS officer Battula Shivadhar Reddy as the new Director General of Police (DGP). The appointment follows the retirement of Dr. Jithender, who demitted office upon attaining the age of superannuation.
Currently serving as Director General of Police, Intelligence, Shivadhar Reddy received his appointment orders from Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao also issued an order transferring him as DGP (Coordination) while assigning him full additional charge as Head of Police Force.
A Distinguished Career
An Indian Police Service officer of the 1994 batch, Shivadhar Reddy has held several crucial assignments over his three-decade-long career at both district and state levels. Born and educated in Hyderabad, he completed his LLB from Osmania University and briefly practised as a lawyer before joining the IPS. Initially allotted to the Andhra Pradesh cadre, he was reassigned to Telangana after the bifurcation in 2014.
He began his policing career as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Anakapalli, Narsipatnam, and Chintapalli sub-divisions of Visakhapatnam district. He later worked with the elite Greyhounds in Adilabad district.
Shivadhar Reddy served as Superintendent of Police (SP) in Nalgonda, Srikakulam, Nellore, and Guntur districts. In Hyderabad, he worked as Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) in 2004 and as DCP, South Zone between 2007–08. He also served as SP in the Special Intelligence Branch (SIB) and was deputed to the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) as part of a peacekeeping mission.
Senior Appointments and Contributions
After being promoted as Deputy Inspector General (DIG), he headed the Special Intelligence Branch and later served in the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) as Additional Director and Director. Between 2012 and 2014, he was Commissioner of Police, Visakhapatnam.
Following the creation of Telangana in 2014, Shivadhar Reddy became the first Chief of the Intelligence Department in the rank of Inspector General. He subsequently held positions in Personnel, Railways, and Road Safety after promotion as Additional DGP.
In December 2023, the Congress government reinstated him as Chief of Intelligence in the rank of Additional DGP. Upon his promotion in August 2024, he continued in the same role, now at the rank of DGP.
Reputation and Recognition
Widely respected as a fair, no-nonsense, and professional officer, Shivadhar Reddy has been credited with playing a decisive role in countering Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) and dismantling terror modules across states.
His exemplary service has earned him multiple awards, including the Police Medal for Gallantry (2002), Antrik Suraksha Seva Medal (2003), United Nations Peace Medal (2003), Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service (2011), President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (2020), Ati Utkrisht Seva Padak (2023), Director of Intelligence Bureau’s Commendation Letter (2015), and the Asadharan Aasuchana Kushalta Padak (2018) for outstanding intelligence operations.
With his appointment as DGP, Battula Shivadhar Reddy is set to lead Telangana Police at a critical juncture, bringing his extensive experience, professional acumen, and reputation for impartiality to the state’s top policing post.
